«O Parlamento Europeu aprovou ontem [12 maio 2012] uma resolução pedindo ao Instituto Europeu de Patentes para parar a concessão de patentes ao melhoramento genético convencional de plantas e animais. A resolução foi apresentada conjuntamente pelos deputados de vários partidos e foi aprovada com ampla maioria. A votação segue as exigências de alguns parlamentos nacionais, como o Bundestag Alemão, para pôr fim às patentes de melhoramento vegetal e animal.

“Este é um enorme sucesso para todos os agricultores, criadores e consumidores que estão preocupados com a monopolização dos nossos recursos alimentares”, diz Ruth Tippe da coligação No Patents on Seeds “Esta votação não pode ser ignorada pelo Instituto Europeu de Patentes – é hora de parar a venda dos recursos necessários para a nossa vida diária.”

Mas ainda há um longo caminho a percorrer – se o Instituto Europeu de Patentes não tomar medidas contra estas patentes, será necessária uma mudança na legislação europeia sobre patentes para fortalecer as proibições actuais. A No Patents on Seeds está a pedir aos governos dos Estados-Membros da UE que deem um primeiro passo na futura decisão sobre a chamada nova Patente Unitária.”»
