The World Forum For Fisher People (WFFP) has issued the call for ‘Nuclear Free World’ on the occasion of the World Fisheries Day 2012.
The threat of Nuclear Disaster is looming large on our planet. The coast, coastal people, coastal natural resources, ecology and biodiversity are under immense threat due to hundreds of Nuclear Power Plants already installed and coming up on the coastal areas. The hot water discharge, slow radiation in the environment and the threat of nuclear accidents like Chernobyl and Fukusima associated with the Nuclear Power Plants are totally unacceptable for the security of life and livelihood of the fishing communities and the people at large.
In india about 40 Nuclear Power Plants are going to be installed on the coast. The common people, especially the fishing communities, have been fighting against these nuclear installations in Haripur in West Bengal, Kobada in Andhra Pradesh, Jaitapur in Maharashtra and Kudankulam in Tamil Nadu.
The valiant struggle of the fishing and other communities against Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant has created a new chapter in the history of people’s struggle for life, livelihood and environment.
National Fishworkers’ Forum (NFF) calls for a Nuclear Free World on the occasion of the World Fisheries Day 2012 (21st November 2012) and dedicates the day to the valiant fisher people fighting against Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant and requests all its affiliated organisations to observe the day with meetings, demonstrations, fishing strikes, press conferences and statements.
In solidarity,
Rambhau Patil
General Secretary, National Fishworkers’ Forum (NFF)
