Throwing Babies on Bonfires

Throwing babies on bonfires
doesn’t make sense to me.
I can’t imagine that they burn well,
so what’s the point?
Political change is hard enough
without wasting efforts
on mere stunts.
Still, if it keeps the soldiers happy
maybe it’s a necessary evil,
at least until some saner species
evolves to govern the earth.
