16 Jan 2017 – O mundo atualmente conta com mais de 1,5 bilhão de bovinos e pouco mais de sete bilhões de pessoas. Os seres humanos consomem 9,5 bilhões de quilos de comida e 20 bilhões de litros de água por dia. Por outro lado, o gado é alimentado com 61 bilhões de quilos de comida e 170 bilhões de litros de água por dia, segundo a Organização das Nações Unidas para Agricultura e Alimentação (FAO).

Ou seja, temos animais criados simplesmente para serem mortos e transformados em carne para pessoas que têm condições de pagar por ela. E muitos não têm, já que o mundo soma mais de um bilhão de pessoas passando fome diariamente. Isso é absurdo e surreal. Gasta-se seis vezes mais para alimentar bovinos, quando poderíamos estudar uma alternativa para destinar comida de origem vegetal para sanar a fome do mundo.

Além do mal que causamos aos animais não humanos, ainda desconsideramos a fome mundial, porque é isso que o consumo de carne privilegia, uma aberrante desigualdade social, já que não se trata de algo justo nem acessível a todo mundo. Acredito que quando comemos carne estamos virando as costas para a miséria que assola o mundo.
