Revival of Gandhian Nonviolence That Faces Unprecedented Challenges and Threats of Violence against Humanity in XXI Century
The International Jubilee Gandhi Committee, expressing the interests of the world civil society, emphatically states that over the past 70 years, there has been a paralysis of nation states regarding the preservation, research, development and utilization of Gandhi’s nonviolence heritage.
In this political vacuum, the social perversion of nonviolence and the dismissal of Gandhi’s unique historical importance create a lost opportunity. The silence of Gandhian practice is a betrayal of nonviolence as the most valuable peacemaking tool in today’s militarism and violence.
Therefore, modern history is marked by an unprecedented increase of violence in all areas of human life and biosphere. It has reached an extreme, especially dangerous limit for the life of humanity and in the sphere of interstate relations and in all social institutions especially of the weakest, vulnerable, and the most unprotected: children, women, the elderly. Violence is the totalitarian ideology of all deviant, aggressive and terrorist groups.
In this connection, the GHA and the International Gandhi Jubilee Committee on behalf of a global civil society that sees the salvation and survival of humanity in nonviolence, calls upon National Parliaments, Governments, UN, UNESCO, UNICEF, The Parliament of the World Religions, UN Women, BRICS, G7 and G20:
To recognize 2019 as Gandhi’s international year of nonviolence in honor of Gandhi’s 150th birth anniversary on 2 Oct 2019, and promote nonviolence by all nations and institutions.
Only in such an active and dedicated way can the heritage of Gandhi’s nonviolence be preserved and revived at a new scientific and political level. We must master and learn to systematically use nonviolence as a great social force and energy.
Gandhi had stated:
“Nonviolence is the greatest force at the disposal of mankind. It is mightier than the mightiest weapon of destruction devised by the ingenuity of man. Nonviolence is the law of our life.”
