This is plain proof all Peace organisations in history have failed. With all respect for their efforts, I have to admit, by not demanding the Abolition of Militarism, they have all been wasting their time. We should not be surprised. I have been saying it for over 60 years now, since my days in Geneva, witnessing what my contacts at the United Nations were doing: “Same as music instruments are for making music, war instruments are made for making war”.
Armed Forces for Peace is as absurd a concept as orchestras for deaf people or cinema for the blind. As senseless as air-conditioning for Eskimos and central heating for tropical countries.
Read below with great attention what the ‘Think Tank of the Year’ has organised. With Armed Forces, Governments have no option other than find enemies. At first, enemies are ‘possible’ or ‘imaginary’. Then, some of them become real thanks to diplomatic negotiations, secret agents and the partnering of Media. With the need to promote military sales, Governments have no option other than organise and promote military conflict, wherever. They’ll use religions, territory, ethnicity, patriotism, natural resources, as triggers. This is the reality since the end of the last World War, nearly 76 years ago.

The British Government has just published its Integrated Security, Defence and Foreign Policy Review, setting out its ambition for the UK’s role in the world over the next decade. Given the announcements around personnel and equipment contained in the IR, the Army is now working to plot a path to the future. But what does the Army need to do to ensure that it is prepared for any immediate conflict, and what does the Army need to be looking at to ensure it retains an asymmetric advantage?
RUSI Land Warfare Conference 2021 will allow partners and allies to explain how they are modernising their forces, calibrating their force posture, and pursuing technological advantage. Alberto Portugheis is a member of the TRANSCEND Network for Peace Development Environment. By profession a concert pianist and pedagogue, he is an active peace campaigner, whose anti-military stance earned him a nomination for the 2008 Nobel

In Portugheis’ writings, speeches, thoughts, ideas and reflections transpire his desire “to make people think” and not take for granted what they read or hear, “no matter where.”
