Careless Flowering

Emanuel E. Garcia – TRANSCEND Media Service
Surrounded by trees,
A public garden steps away,
The autumn-angling sun stirring the roses,
Those that remained, to the sharpest
Splendour of their season’s lives
And yet we chose the confines of a car:
It was warm and we were a little tired
And you were cracking me up with your jokes,
There was a mild delirium in the air
So when a sparrow landed, softly,
On the windshield and paused,
Moving its head the way sparrows do
As if to get a better glimpse,
I smiled, you sat up straight,
We wondered, both of us
In all my years of parking anywhere,
A bird had never paid a call so close
It flew off not because we startled it
Or it was in haste, after a moment,
The way a thoughtful messenger might do,
An inconspicuous god or goddess sent
To keep the fires of mirth and art
Alive
And so we talked and talked
Surrounded by trees and careless flowering
