Man and Praying Woman

Emanuel E. Garcia – TRANSCEND Media Service

The white clay clumped and,
Hardening, needed to be worked
Quickly

My hands followed forgotten emissaries
Who whispered fissures, escarpments,
Ligaments and tendrils,
The shattered ice of forest lakes
On the long lunar escape:
Another self begun

As I stepped back
The rough figures began to please –
He, hulking, looming,
An arm outstretched, and she,
Silent and prayerful –
They were, these two,
The all of what was left,
The culmination of my frantic luxury

Perhaps she would arise,
Perhaps they would walk together –
Once I had turned away –
To watch the curling sneer of a wave
Unfolding, listen for its rumble
Over and over as they approached
A shoreline bend

I would follow them gladly,
I would wait beneath the passing heavens
For the sands to swallow or support

Here however they are poised:
Their silhouettes divide my room,
Past and future, brilliance and neglect

Whimsically I slice an apple ,
Bring my clay-besotted fingers
To my aching mouth
