Johan Galtung mottok i dag Erik Byes Minnepris 2011 under Protestfestivalen.

Kristiansand: – Erik Byes Minnepris gis til en person som over en lengre periode har fremvist et uredd og brennende engasjement for å påvirke samfunnsutviklingen i positiv lei lokalt, nasjonalt og internasjonalt, heter det i juryens begrunnelse.

Videre står det at vedkommende må ha fremvist mot til å gå mot strømmen og de moteriktige standpunkt, til kompromissløst å kjempe for rettferdighet, fred og menneskeverd. Protestfestivalens minneprisråd nominerer kandidater. Avgjørelsen tas i samråd med Erik Byes nærmeste familie. Erik Byes Minnepris er en statuett i bronse, laget av billedhugger Arne Vinje Gunnerud.

Galtung (80) er opprinnelig samfunnsforsker med hele verden som virkefelt. Han er utdannet sosiolog og matematiker og regnes som grunnlegger av freds– og konfliktforskningen. Han er også stifter av PRIO (Institutt for Fredsforskning), det første i sitt slag i Europa, sammen med flere andre samfunnsforskere.

Galtung ble utnevnt til professor i freds– og konfliktforskning av regjeringen ved Universitetet i Oslo i 1969. Han er i dag direktør for det internasjonale Transcend–nettverket for fred og utvikling, som han grunnla i 1993, og grunnlegger av Transcend–metoden. Han har også fungert som megler i flere land. Galtung kom direkte til prisutdelingen i Kristiansand fra Frankrike, og drar videre for å holde foredrag i Bern i Sveits.
