In a town in Alabama in the 1960s, a rumor was spreading that a white girl had been murdered. The black folks feared a pogrom and gathered to discuss how they could protect themselves. As the meeting began, a man came running out of breath, full of excitement. “I have wonderful news, brothers. The murdered girl was black.”
