Dear friends of Johan Galtung and his great and persistent impulse for peace – the one that was his guiding light from a young age until he died on 17 Feb this year, aged 93. We invite you to a gathering in Jondal to commemorate the extensive work of the father of peace research. Welcome to honour his life! The program will start with peace-related input. We invite you to a lunch with cultural features and short contributions from those who want to share memories from their collaboration with Johan: we look forward for you to sign up.

In August 2022, the Hardanger Academy under former chairwoman Johanne Hartwig was contacted by Johan Galtung, in consultation with his wife Fumiko. Johan then said that he wanted to donate his archive and his library with associated photos and awards to the Hardanger Academy.
He and Fumi wished a memorial gathering to be arranged in Jondal, where the Galtung family has its roots. Johan pointed out that everyone who wanted to, should be welcome to this gathering “which should not be sad, but a celebration of life.”
It is with gratitude and joy that we now invite you to a memorial gathering.
We regard the donation of the library and archive as a declaration of trust. An agreement has been signed between the Hardanger Academy, the Kraftmuseet and Johan Galtung. We are happy about this, as SINDARK – the State’s industrial archive at the Kraftmuseet in Tyssedal will actively manage the archive in the best possible way. The work to turn the study room in the Galtung suite at Jonatunet into a room for displaying Johan Galtung’s private library, photos and awards has begun.

Travel Options to the Memorial Gathering and the Summer Symposium:
- There is a bus from Bergen Bus Station at 55am. There is also a direct bus at 9pm that reaches the last ferry to Jondal. The trip Bergen-Jondal takes approx. 2 hours to the ferry which takes 20 minutes.
- If you want to come the day before, there is a bus from Oslo Bus station that takes approx. seven and a half hours and stops in Jondal. For those who would like to return on Monday evening, it is possible to take a bus to Bergen at 18:14. There is a night bus to Oslo from Jondal at 23:21 or a bus on Tuesday at 11:10, 14:10.
Accommodation:
For most visitors, from abroad in particular, but also for domestic long-distance travellers, it would probably be desirable to spend one or two nights in Hardanger – with plenty of time for conversations on the occasion we gather. We can then offer accommodation in our own hostel Jonatunet, which has a few one- and two-bed rooms next to its many multi-bed rooms, and all meals in the house’s good dining rooms. There are also rooms for rent at “Folgefonna Gjestetun” and “Hardanger House.”
It is also possible to spend the night in Norheimsund, for example at Sandven Hotell with a journey time by car/bus and ferry of approx. 40 minutes. There is a good bus connection, except that the last bus leaves at 18.14 from Jondal on Monday.

Jeg kunne gjerne møte på Jondalssamlingen om det kunne bidra til å øke troen på og arbeidet for fred i dette landet. Det ville Johan Galtung fortjene! Jeg traff han første gang på et møte i Folkereisning mot krig i Trondheim ca. 1951.
Sjelden har behovet for fredsinnsats vært større enn nå. Jeg tenker stadig at hadde der i det minste vært en person på Stortinget som ville arbeide aktivt for fredsinnsats kunne vi kanskje komme et stykke på vei.
Det mest fredsnedbrytende vi gjør i dag er vår tro på at våpen og opprustning kan være fredsskapende gjennom avskrekking. Det er vel åpenbart at det virker stikk motsatt! All militarisering er i høyeste grad påskrekkende! Det vi oppnår er å skape frykt, hat og gjensidig opprustning, med økende fare for oss og resten av verden.
Det vi etter mitt syn særlig trenger er: Å kvitte oss med alle krigere, alle våpen, all trussel, alt hemmelighold, all mistro, all sjikane og mangel på tillit og samarbeid. I stedet må vi yte hjelp til positive sivile levekår: Samarbeid om aktuelle problemer, innsats og hjelp med arbeidsinnsats for problemløsning og positiv utvikling. Da vil vi oppnå tillit og samarbeid og bli et eksempel som skaper tro på at det kan nytte, også for dem!
På Quora.no (et ultrakonservativt USA-organ) og på min blogg redde-verden.com skrev jeg en gang at vi trenger et freds- og fremtidsparti i Norge. Det fikk 36 000 lesere, mest av alt jeg har skrevet der noen gang og flest oppstemmer (se gjerne quora.com/profile/Bjørn-Eidsvig) Der er en norsk og en engelsk utgave. Gir du meg oppstemmer på Quora får det jeg skriver der også langt flere lesere(!).
Det jeg mener er at spørsmålet om et virkningsfullt fredsparti bør bli tatt opp på Jondalssammenkomsten. Kan dette føre til etablering av et fredsparti vil det være et ypperlig møteresultat og et fantastisk utkomme av Galtungs innsats gjennom livet! Antakelig kan det bety litt for verdens videre utvikling også!

I so wish I could attend, as I have such fond memories of the TRANSCEND symposium I participated in in beautiful Jondal in 2009. It’s close to where Johan’s family has a lovely hut on a remote lake.
