An armed robber held up a convenience store. The quick-thinking store clerk asked if he could make a short call to his wife, and the robber agreed. Luckily, the woman at “911” who handled the call didn’t take offense at being called “Honey,” and dispatched a police squad to the store. In an interview with the media, the criminal was quoted as saying, “You just can’t trust anyone anymore.”

The boss has on his desk a toaster, a radio, a TV, a fan and a typewriter. He says to an attractive young lady applying for a secretarial job: “Before we can hire you, there is a little test: which one of those items is the typewriter?”

Dietrich Fischer (1941-2015) from Münsingen, Switzerland, got a Licentiate in Mathematics from the University of Bern 1968 and his Ph.D. in Computer Science from New York University 1976. Fischer was a MacArthur Fellow in International Peace and Security at Princeton University 1986-88, has taught mathematics, computer science, economics and peace studies at various universities, and been a consultant to the United Nations. He was co-founder, with Johan Galtung, of the TRANSCEND Network for Peace, Development and Environment in 1993.
