Israel Starts Building 600 New Settlement Houses

Hundreds of new housing units under construction by Israel in East Jerusalem are expected to be inhabited by settlers within two years.

Israel began to build hundreds of new housing units in East Jerusalem and seized land in the West Bank on Saturday [11 Oct 2014], despite international condemnation.

The new units will expand four Israeli settlements across the Palestinian city, according to a report by Middle East Monitor.

The Israeli government also announced the seizure of around 1 square kilometer of farmland near Bethlehem, according to a report by the Palestinian news agency WAFA. “The seized land is intended for the construction of settlement units, parks, a synagogue and agricultural roads,” WAFA reported.

The Palestinian owners have two months to appeal the seizures under Israeli law. The new construction in East Jerusalem and West Bank land seizures come on the heels of Israel’s announcement last month to undertake one of the largest land grabs in recent decades. In late September, the Israeli government approved plans to build more than 2,500 homes in East Jerusalem, which has a majority Arab population.

The move sparked criticism from the European Union, which warned the land grab threatened a fragile peace with Palestinians.

“This represents a further highly detrimental step that undermines prospects for a two-state solution and calls into question Israel’s commitment to a peacefully negotiated settlement with the Palestinians,” the European Union’s External Action Service (EEAS) said in a statement.
