Walter’s Search

Tom Greening – TRANSCEND Media Service

He said he joined the Army
to give meaning to his life,
something his career
as a short-order cook in Alabama
lacked.

The meaning he got was the challenge
of recovering from an IED
and battlefront surgery.

His surgeons learned a lot too,
standing in an inch of blood
as they saved his nose, many of his teeth,
and much of his right leg.

So now Walter is a man,
physical therapy is his job,
and his search for meaning limps along
like the war itself.
