A newspaper editor confused Alfred Nobel with his older brother, and when his brother died, it printed an obituary, saying essentially,
“It is good that Alfred Nobel has finally left this earth. By inventing dynamite, he has contributed enormously to the destructiveness of war, and has the blood of thousands of people on his hands.”
When Alfred Nobel read this about himself, he decided that he had to do something to improve his image. He established the Nobel Prize, which now for over a century has recognized and rewarded remarkable individuals who have contributed to a better world.
Sometimes, mistakes, even lies, can have a serendipitous effect.

Dietrich Fischer (1941-2015) from Münsingen, Switzerland, got a Licentiate in Mathematics from the University of Bern 1968 and his Ph.D. in Computer Science from New York University 1976. 1986-88 he was a MacArthur Fellow in International Peace and Security at Princeton University. He has taught mathematics, computer science, economics and peace studies at various universities and been a consultant to the United Nations.
