Nobel Peace Laureate Mairead Maguire Appeals to President Trump for Peace Leadership

1 May 2017 – Mairead Maguire, who visited the women’s peace movements of North and South Korea last year with 30 international women from around the world, made the following appeal to President Trump and the U.S. administration:
“The people of North and South Korea want peace and they want a peace treaty. They do not want their country to be bombed or their government to bomb others. Having visited both North and South Korea last year and walked with thousands and thousands of Korean women, North and South, I am convinced that peace is possible and what is needed is the political will of all parties to the conflict to dialogue and for negotiations to move from a Korean armistice to a Korean Peace Treaty.
“I therefore would like to appeal to President Trump and his administration not to carry out a military strike on North Korea, but to use the means of dialogue and diplomacy to reach a peace treaty for North Korea. Such peace leadership by President Trump will give hope to the people of Korea and all of humanity.
“The people of the world need to know that peace is possible between all the human family and that there are political leaders who have the courage to move from enmity to friendship and from war to peace.”

The Peace People began in 1976 as a protest movement against the ongoing violence in Northern Ireland. Its three founders were Mairead Maguire, Betty Williams and Ciaran McKeown. Over 100,000 people were involved in the initial movement and two of the founders, Mairead and Betty, received the Nobel Peace Prize for that year. The first sentence in the wonderful letter Mairead Maguire addressed to US President Donald Trump “The people of North and South Korea want peace and they want a peace treaty. They do not want their country to be bombed or their government to bomb others.” applies to all countries in the world. Nobody in the world wants a bomb dropping on his home and killing his family. So…..WHY does the modern world accept we pay scientists to invent and develop bombs, allow their manufacturing and trade? why do we train pilots to rain bomba from great heights and at virtiginous speeds? WHY nobody protests about us making and selling bombardiers, at 50 million dollars apiece??????
Donald Trump is the President of the USA. His No.1 duty is to help Americans and among them, priority is per force given to people who make significant donations to political parties, the bomb – and other military industries – among them.
Military manufacturets are not idiots who’ll invest in a Government that’s planning Peace, thus making them Bankrupt. We have to be realistic. If bombs are not dropped in Korea, they’ll have to find another destination.
If bombs, rockets, guns, grenades, etc were for Peace, we would provide them to every student and teacher in schools to guarantee Peace in the classroom.
We shouldn’t have divided Korea in the first place. Once the Russians drove the Japanese out of Korea, (after 35 years of occupationm), USA and Russia should have left the Koreans alone. Or, work together, American and Russian, to help the re-building of Korea. Instead, they preferred to get rid of the surplus military equipment from World War II, thus making room for the new generation weapons in the making.
