Dietrich Fischer – TRANSCEND Media Service
Grenville Clark, the co-author with Louis B. Sohn of World Peace Through World Law, gave a talk in a town in the U.S. Midwest around the year 1900. He noticed all men were carrying two loaded guns in their belt.
A year later he returned and was surprised to see that nobody had a gun. He asked people what had happened.
“Shortly after you left,” someone told him, “there was a series of fatal shootings. A judge passed through our town and offered to come by once a week to sit to court if we would agree to give up our guns and appoint a sheriff. We thought, why not try, and have indeed felt much safer since then.”
The same simple insight still has to dawn on the leaders of the world’s nations.

Dietrich Fischer (1941-2015) from Münsingen, Switzerland, got a Licentiate in Mathematics from the University of Bern 1968 and his Ph.D. in Computer Science from New York University 1976. 1986-88 he was a MacArthur Fellow in International Peace and Security at Princeton University. He has taught mathematics, computer science, economics and peace studies at various universities and been a consultant to the United Nations. He was co-founder, with Johan Galtung, of the TRANSCEND Network for Peace, Development and Environment in 1993.
