The People’s Movement Against Nuclear Energy has been leading a long and completely non-violent struggle against the Koodankulam Nuclear Power Project. Their struggle has been highly appreciated for its length and non-violence all across the globe. The government of India and the state government of Tamil Nadu unleashed massive police repression against these innocent protestors.

French President Francois Hollande is making his first visit out of Europe and has chosen India as a destination for his visit starting 14th February [2013]. On his radar is to sell Areva’s failed EPR (European Pressurized Reactor) nuclear reactors to India. Even as France has not been able to implement the EPR reactors there or in Finland nor has the US regulator certified it. However, the Indian government is eager to set up these reactors in a huge area in coastal Maharashtra – at Jaitapur – a highly bio-diverse region that needs preservation.

Recently, E Amudhan R.P was in Mumbai for the public screening of ‘Radiation Stories Part 3–Koodankulam’ and shared with me his views on what has made the Koodankulam struggle such a success and the inside details about the struggle. It should serve as a guide for other agitations and for film makers who can learn from the strategies used by the people of Koodankulam and those used by the government in this epic David vs Golaith struggle.
