2 Jan 2020 – If children like himself had a choice, Gul Mohammad thinks it better that they be able to study instead of having to work. He values an education and doesn’t want to join the estimated 1.6 million Afghan addicts. “If I don’t study, I could become like some people who stop studying and become addicts and who can’t find any job to support their families.” He started selling bread in a bakery when he was 8.

Amrullah has studied nonviolence at the Street Kids School, in Kabul, Afghanistan, for almost three years. The school, with 94 students this year, is a project of the Afghan Peace Volunteers (APVs) at the Borderfree Nonviolence Community Centre. There, the students also gain literacy and math skills, supplementing their lessons at the government schools.
