French President Francois Hollande is making his first visit out of Europe and has chosen India as a destination for his visit starting 14th February [2013]. On his radar is to sell Areva’s failed EPR (European Pressurized Reactor) nuclear reactors to India. Even as France has not been able to implement the EPR reactors there or in Finland nor has the US regulator certified it. However, the Indian government is eager to set up these reactors in a huge area in coastal Maharashtra – at Jaitapur – a highly bio-diverse region that needs preservation.

As the missiles and tanks are geared up to be paraded at the India Gate on the country’s 64th Republic Day, people’s faith in the promise they did to themselves is missing. Last year, people in Koodankulam marked 26th January as Black Day. With more than 10 thousand people booked under sedition and war against the Indian state in Koodankulam, it is time we as a country face the issue head-on. We interviewed S P Udayakumar, leader of the massive nonviolent protest in Koodankulam.

When the USA admits publicly the amount of nuclear waste produced in their plants & discuss with independent experts to come up with a solution to protect their people from the radiation for next 10,000 years, our India is busy in labeling the people who are questioning them as fools, illiterate and anti nationals funded by foreign NGOs.

9 Sep 2012 – Siege continues in Koodankulam: At least 20,000 people on the eastern compound wall from the sea side. People refused to talk to the Superintendent of Police (SP); the District Collector of Thirunelveli is expected to arrive. Administration’s demand to talk to the movement leaders – against whom sedition and other charges are slapped – is also refused by the people.

A month ago, when our first report was written, we had no information about the quality of the rector pressure vessel (RPV) installed at KKNPP (Koodankulam Nuclear Power Project) during the month of Aug 2006.Vessels of that vintage would not have been allowed in post-Chernobyl Russia after the 1988 updating of pressure vessel standards. Such sub-standard pressure vessels are not permissible in the major markets. In this case, if the reactor is started, it will be next to impossible to inspect it. Hence the emergency.

Several eminent citizens, concerned about nuclear safety and the government’s campaign of slander against the Koodankulam anti-nuclear plant agitation in Tamil Nadu, have signed a public statement denouncing the government’s high-handedness against the peaceful protesters in Koodankulam. The signatories also include writers Arundhati Roy, Adil Jussawalla and Vandana Shiva. The statement is of vital public importance in view of the government’s plans to forge ahead with nuclear power expansion regardless of its safety and economic issues, and strong public opposition to new nuclear reactors.
