On 28 Nov 1843, the United Kingdom and France jointly recognized the Hawaiian Kingdom as a sovereign and independent State, which was followed by formal recognition by the United States on 6 Jul 1844. By 1893, when it was overthrown, the Hawaiian Kingdom maintained over 90 legations (embassies) and consulates throughout the world.

28 Nov 2019 – Dear relatives, as a Native American woman, today is not a day of giving thanks. Most of us who were educated in Western schools were taught that today acknowledges the “Native Americans” saving the lives of the “Pilgrims,” by teaching them how to garden and hunt. They then supposedly shared a meal together, which was the predecessor of the Thanksgiving meal most Americans share today. That is not what happened and that is not what today represents for me.

The U.S. spends 32 million dollars per minute on war – every minute of every hour of every day of the year. The U.S., which represents only 5% of the world’s population, has 45% of the world’s guns. There are 390 million guns in the U.S., more guns than people. This includes 15-20 million military assault weapons, the kind used in the recent mass killings in El Paso and Dayton.

On January 17, 1893 a coup d’état was carried out against Queen Lili’uokalani and the Hawaiian Kingdom by foreign business interests with U.S. Marines. An illegal U.S. occupation of Hawai’i has continued ever since. Today, occupied Hawai’i is home to more than 100 U.S. military installations. Native Hawaiians, 20% of the population, make up the majority of homeless and 60% of the prison population in their own homeland.

27 Oct 2018 – In recent days, we have learned about the terrorist murders at a Jewish Synagogue, the mailing of package bombs to critics of President Trump, etc. What we haven’t heard as much are the ongoing US wars (is it currently six or seven?) in the Middle East that have resulted in millions killed, wounded or made refugees; covert US “Special Ops” taking place all over the world; and the past US wars and regime changes in Latin America that have created chaos, violence, poverty and a vast number of fleeing refugees and asylum seekers.

The people who live closest to these industrial sites are low income and minority communities. Poor people of color bear the greatest burden of climate change, harmful pollution, and have the fewest options when natural or man-made disaster strikes. Climate disaster and nuclear war pose the two greatest threats to life on the planet.

It has caused extensive radioactive and chemical contamination of the planet’s air, water, and soil. He refused to be drafted to fight in Vietnam and was given the maximum sentence of 5 years in prison, stripped of his world heavyweight boxing title, and banned from boxing for nearly 4 years in the prime of his life.

Russia has two bases in the Middle East and a handful in Central Asia. The U.S. has 662 bases around the world and Special Forces deployed in between 70 and 90 countries at any moment. Last year SOFs were active in 147 countries. The U.S. is actively engaged in five wars and is considering a sixth in Libya. Russian military spending will fall next year, and the U.S. will out-spend Moscow by a factor of 10. Who in this comparison looks threatening?

The U.S. likes to see itself as the “exceptional” nation, a bastion of freedom and democracy, the world’s benevolent “good guy.” Evil is out there in others – the terrorists. But much of the world sees the U.S. (and its ally France) as a dangerous racist empire of domination out to exploit and control labor and resources to benefit corporate interests and a wealthy elite at the expense of the earth and everyone else. ISIS obviously sees itself as the “good guys” and the problem of evil focused in France, the US, etc. Both sides appear to agree on “by any means necessary.” Terrorism against terrorism is terrorism.

We Are All Down Winders! March 1st is known as “Nuclear-Free & Independent Pacific Day.” It commemorates the tragic 15 megaton U.S. nuclear bomb test, code named Bravo, at Bikini atoll in the Marshall Islands of Micronesia, on March 1, 1954. Many people died in the Marshall Islands from radiation contamination and fallout downwind of the Bravo blast and the 66 additional U.S. nuclear weapon tests there.

The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission is preparing to issue a “License” for military bombing of radiation contaminated bases in Hawaii and elsewhere. The major public health danger of DU radiation is inhalation of small alpha particles. Hawaii retired Army MD and MPH Dr. Lorrin W. Pang said “alpha particle emitters within your body is the most deadly form of radiation of all. It will mutate your DNA more than any other type of radiation.” DU has been linked to a wide range of health problems, including certain cancers.

After years of denial, the military now admits to using Depleted Uranium radiation weapons in Hawaii as early as 1961 for the secret Davy Crockett nuclear weapon system. How much DU has been used in Hawaii over the years is in question. But since the Army says that DU was only banned in training in 1996 the amount of contamination could be extensive.

The store ads all say “SALE, SALE, SALE! The real meaning is BUY! BUY! BUY! The ads are a lure to create “Wants” not “Needs.” This holiday season do not buy the hype. Buy nothing or buy local. Support an economy that benefits the 99%, not the 1% of global corporate interests that suck labor and resources out of our local economies. Add to this mess, endless wars for empire disguised as “war on terror” to keep us all in a state of fear and obedience to those in power. The oil companies and the arms merchants have never seen more profitable times; they like things just as they are.
