US Secretary of State John Kerry has made a series of public statements in mourning for the 25-year-old Foreign Service officer Anne Smedinghoff, killed in a Taliban car bomb attack in Afghanistan on Saturday [6 Apr 2013]. The same day that she lost her life, a US airstrike killed at least 18 people, including 11 children ranging from a few months to eight years old.

The Obama administration is “markedly widening its role” in the escalating French-led war in Mali, according to a report published Monday [4 Mar 2013] in the Wall Street Journal where it quoted that the US role in Mali represented a “rare North African success story,” in a new “counterterrorism strategy of working by, with and through’ local forces.” In other words, US imperialism is counting on the region’s servile national elites to provide African troops as a proxy force.

4 September 2012 – Last month, the California State Assembly passed a resolution urging state educational institutions to crack down on criticism of Israel on campuses, which the resolution defines as “anti-Semitism.”The resolution was drafted by Republican Linda Halderman and passed without public discussion. The vote on the resolution came when most students were between semesters and away from their campuses. The resolution is available here.

On July 14 [2012], the New York Times published an article by national security reporter Scott Shane entitled “The Moral Case for Drones.” At first glance, one might have thought that the headline was intended as a Swiftian satire. But no satire was intended. Quite the opposite: the piece seeks to justify the assassination program run out of the Obama White House, which has resulted in hundreds of deaths of civilians in Pakistan, Afghanistan, Yemen and elsewhere.

This week’s [26 Mar 2012] gathering of world leaders at the Nuclear Security Summit in South Korea was the occasion for a great deal of cynical posturing about nuclear disarmament and world peace. What is under way is not nuclear disarmament, but an arms race. The key index of this new build up is not the absolute number of nuclear warheads, but the sophistication of the delivery systems and their ability to evade detection and defensive measures.

The cables, from among the 251,287 in WikiLeaks’ possession, provide important information on the machinations of US politicians, on their tight control over Haitian government functions, and about their drive to reopen Haiti to capitalist exploitation.

The Fukushima disaster has underscored the corrosive and corrupting character of the profit system. It is not nuclear technology as such that presents the danger, but the social and economic order under which it has developed. If nuclear power remains in the hands of private corporations and under the domination of the capitalist market, the environment and public health and safety will inevitably be subordinated to the drive for profit.
