If you listen to Dylan’s piercing voice and follow the lyrics closely, you might be startled to be told, not from someone who can be dismissed as some sort of disgruntled “conspiracy nut,” but by the most famous musician in the world, that there was a government conspiracy to kill JFK, that Oswald didn’t do it, and that the killers then went for the president’s brothers.

Why Nation States See Themselves in a War against a Virus and Forbid Any Normal Life
Michael Kuhn – TRANSCEND Media Service, 6 Apr 2020

30 Mar 2020 – Is it really all happening or are we living in a science fiction? Within a few days nothing is as it always was. Everybody must go home and without any objection and all this carried out as a veritable state action, always staged and carried out by the foreign ministries of the states with the right publicity for the people at home and the other states abroad, telling everybody that after all, ‘it’s not about health issues, but about state affairs between states.’

Why Inequality Could Spread COVID-19
Joseph Stiglitz et al. | The Lancet - TRANSCEND Media Service, 6 Apr 2020

2 Apr 2020 – Pandemics rarely affect all people in a uniform way. The Black Death in the 14th century reduced the global population by a third, with the highest number of deaths among the poorest. As these populations are more likely to have chronic conditions, this puts them at higher risk of COVID-19-associated mortality. Since the pandemic has perpetuated an economic crisis, unemployment rates will rise substantially and weakened welfare safety nets further threaten health and social insecurity.

Messianic Zionism – The Ass and the Red Heifer
Moshé Machover | Monthly Review – TRANSCEND Media Service, 6 Apr 2020

1 Feb 2020 – The relation between Zionism and Judaism (the Jewish religion) is paradoxical and complex. In its early days, Zionism was apparently a thoroughly secular political movement. Apparently. In reality, while its ego was secular, its id has always been religious. And in recent times, the latter has emerged from its hidden recess and is parading in full view. A form of religious Zionism has gained influence in Israel, which shares with militant Christian evangelism and Islamic jihadism the character of political movement with fundamentalist religious ideology.

Bigger Brother
Tim Wu | The New York Review of Books - TRANSCEND Media Service, 6 Apr 2020

9 Apr 2020 Issue – What we have learned, what Skinner and secret police alike have realized, is this: to know everything about someone is to create the power to control that person. We may not be there yet, but there is a theoretical point—call it the Skinnerlarity—where enough data will be gathered about humanity to predict, with some reasonable reliability, what everyone on earth will do at any moment. That accomplishment would change the very structure of experience. As the legal scholar Jonathan Zittrain has said, it would make life “a highly realistic but completely tailored video game where nothing happens by chance.”

The Struggle against Coronavirus: Are We at “War”? How Will It Change the World?
Richard E. Rubenstein – TRANSCEND Media Service, 30 Mar 2020

Like a wartime enemy, the virus is portrayed as a maleficent external threat, an alien force that endangers one’s homeland and personal security. Associating the biological threat with a political adversary, the American president labeled it a “Chinese virus,” while Chinese leaders have insisted that the virus was manufactured at the Pentagon’s biological warfare facility in Fort Detrick. This game of blame-the-adversary is absurd, of course.

Year Six of the War in Yemen
Abubakar Ben Rajeh | Cordoba Peace Institute Geneva - TRANSCEND Media Service, 30 Mar 2020

26 Mar 2020 – The Yemeni parties must rally around a comprehensive national project, in order to find consensus on the shape of the Yemeni state and its territorial integrity; and the establishment of a transitional authority based on the principle of partnership, leading to a comprehensive political process that is separate from subnational projects and regional polarisation. Otherwise, Yemen will remain subject to international and regional polarisation, which will prolong the war and exacerbate the suffering of the Yemeni people.

Antonino Drago – TRANSCEND Media Service, 30 Mar 2020

An Offer and an Appeal to You…
Robin Edward Poulton, Ph.D. - TRANSCEND Media Service, 30 Mar 2020

We all have interesting and varied sources of information and analysis. One of the most exciting and insightful that I use and enjoy is TRANSCEND Media Service, founded by Professor Johann Galtung, the “Father of Peace Studies” and leader of a multi-national group of distinguished academics and activists working for peace in all its forms. The articles analyse world affairs from a multitude of different approaches. I would like to offer this information source to you and your students. A University Education should challenge students to seek out ideas and to discover new sources. TMS does some of this preparatory work for your students: they can find many unexpected analyses and varying points of view in a single website.

Richard Falk | Global Justice in the 21st Century – TRANSCEND Media Service, 23 Mar 2020

17 Mar 2020 – A few days ago when WHO officially declared the COVID-19 a ‘pandemic’ a Rubicon of consciousness and global governance was crossed. Hundreds of millions of individuals around the world are coping physically and mentally with what that word never before used in my lifetime means for themselves and those they care most about. The mental dimensions of self-isolation may turn out to be a big challenge almost as big as the disease itself.

Race

29 Jan 2020 – Race, the idea that the human species is divided into distinct groups on the basis of inherited physical and behavioral differences. Genetic studies in the late 20th century refuted the existence of biogenetically distinct races, and scholars now argue that “races” are cultural interventions reflecting specific attitudes and beliefs that were imposed on different populations in the wake of western European conquests beginning in the 15th century.

Weaponising Mass Distraction from Overpopulation Denial?
Anthony Judge | Laetus in Praesens - TRANSCEND Media Service, 23 Mar 2020

The future may well marvel at the primary strategy advocated globally in response to the coronavirus pandemic, namely social distancing. The question here is the viability of social distancing on a planet on which overcrowding is already widely recognized — but as a purely local challenge. This is most evident in the restriction of access of tourists to popular destinations. The reality of local overcrowding is the theme of a separate argument which notes the total unreality of global implications

The Robbery of Nature: Capitalism and the Ecological Rift
John Bellamy Foster and Brett Clark | Monthly Review – TRANSCEND Media Service, 23 Mar 2020

Departing from much previous scholarship, Foster and Clark adopt a materialist and dialectical approach, bridging the gap between social and environmental critiques of capitalism. Observing Elites Manipulate Our Fear: COVID-19, Propaganda and Knowledge
Robert J. Burrowes, Ph.D. – TRANSCEND Media Service, 23 Mar 2020

While humans stand on the brink of precipitating our own extinction, virtually everyone remains unaware of the critical nature of our plight. The ongoing human death toll from the activities that are generating this crisis numbers in the many millions each year while the number of species driven to extinction is estimated at 200 per day. In contrast, a virus that is killing a very small proportion of the minuscule number it has infected is causing panic in many countries around the world, devastating the travel and tourism industries while emptying supermarket shelves of food and that apparently most vital of commodities: toilet paper.

Why Sanctions against Iran and Venezuela during a Pandemic Are Cruel
Vijay Prashad and Paola Estrada | Independent Media Institute – TRANSCEND Media Service, 23 Mar 2020

In the midst of a pandemic, one would expect that all countries would collaborate in every way to mitigate the spread of the virus and its impact on human society. One would expect that a humanitarian crisis of this magnitude would provide the opportunity to suspend or end all inhumane economic sanctions and political blockades against certain countries. Is this not the time for the imperialist bloc, led by the United States of America, to end the sanctions against Cuba, Iran, Venezuela, and a series of other countries?
