Chile: Bachelet Upholds Pinochet’s Call for Oblivion
Ramona Wadi | Strategic Culture Foundation – TRANSCEND Media Service, 11 Nov 2019

6 Nov 2019 – What Bachelet describes as a “current crisis” has roots that go deeper into a history which Chilean governments prefer to dissociate from the demonstrations. Neoliberalism in Chile is a brutal ongoing experiment and Bachelet does indeed know better than other diplomats at the UN that the protests must achieve their aim before any so-called dialogue with politicians, whether right-wing or centre-left. However, her role at the UNHRC makes it easy for her to rely on prepared statements.

How to Crush a Bankers’ Dictatorship: A Lesson from 1933
Matthew Ehret | Strategic Culture Foundation – TRANSCEND Media Service, 11 Nov 2019

8 Nov 2019 – While everyone knows that the 1929 market crash unleashed four years of hell in America which quickly spread across Europe under the great depression, not many people have realized that this was a controlled blowout. While I’m not arguing that a systemic change is not vital to protect people from the effects of a general meltdown of the $1.2 trillion derivatives bubble sometimes called “the western banking system”, what central bankers are proposing is a poison more deadly than the disease they promise to cure.

Is There a Place for Ethics in Smart Cities?
Dr Jaspal Kaur Sadhu Singh – TRANSCEND Media Service, 11 Nov 2019

The concern here lies in the question as to whether we are being too hasty in turning to technology to resolve all the problems that plague city-dwellers. “Smart Cities” seem to appeal to the modern sensibilities of progressiveness… Cities need to be sustainable, resilient, economically vibrant, inclusive and democratic. Technology being the mere scaffolding that lifts the structures of our society, cities cannot be built from technology up; they are built from the needs of the humans who reside within them.

Popular Resistance in Palestine
Mazin Qumsiyeh – TRANSCEND Media Service, 11 Nov 2019

“This is a timely and remarkable book written by the most important chronicler of contemporary popular resistance in Palestine. Mazin Qumsiyeh brilliantly evokes the spirit of Mahatma Gandhi, Edward Said, Rachel Corrie and many others, to tell the unvarnished truth about Palestine and Zionist settler colonialism. With its focus on ‘history and activism from below’, this is a work of enormous significance. Developing further his original ideas on human rights in Palestine, media activism, public policies and popular, non-violent resistance, Mazin Qumsiyeh’s book is a must read for anyone interested in justice and how to produce the necessary breakthrough in the Israel-Palestine conflict.” — Prof. Nur Masalha

Ending Violence, Exploitation, Ecological Destruction and War: Creating a Culture of Peace
Robert J. Burrowes, Ph.D. – TRANSCEND Media Service, 11 Nov 2019

For those of us concerned with the struggle to create cultures of peace or, even, a world culture of peace, there are some fundamental questions to consider including the classic question discussed by two of humanity’s greats, Albert Einstein and Sigmund Freud–‘Why War?’ Peace entails far more than simply a state without military (including terrorist) violence and war. Beyond these forms of violence, many exponents of peace seek the end of other dimensions of what I call ‘visible’ violence.

Our Vanishing World (Part 3): Insects
Robert J. Burrowes, Ph.D. – TRANSCEND Media Service, 4 Nov 2019

About 12,000 years ago, late Stone Age humans precipitated the Neolithic (agricultural) revolution that marked the start of the steady rise to civilization. Coincidentally, this occurred at the same time as the beginning of what is now known as the Holocene Epoch, the geological epoch in which humans still live. However, since the industrial revolution commencing in about 1750, just 270 years ago, humans have been destroying Earth’s biosphere with such tremendous ferocity that the Earth we inherited at the beginning of the Holocene Epoch is vanishing before our eyes. And life is vanishing with it.

Critique of Nonviolent Politics from Mahatma Gandhi to the Anti-Nuclear Movement
Howard Ryan – TRANSCEND Media Service, 4 Nov 2019

Critique of Nonviolent Politics may be the only comprehensive critique of nonviolent theory that has been written. Since 1977, I had been active in the movement against nuclear power and weapons which, in California, focused its protests at the Diablo Canyon Nuclear Plant and at the Lawrence Livermore Labs where nuclear weapons are designed. Nonviolence was the prevailing political theory in the movement, especially in the “direct action” wing which organized mass blockades and occupations at nuclear facilities. Nonviolence informed our tactics and strategies, our group processes, and our general ethos and outlook.

Psychology’s “Dark Triad” and the Billionaire Class
Roy Eidelson – TRANSCEND Media Service, 28 Oct 2019

25 Oct 2019 – The data are stark and compelling. The richest 400 families in the United States own financial assets that exceed the wealth of the bottom 60% of all American households combined. U.S. billionaires pay taxes at a lower effective rate than working class families. The CEOs of S&P 500 companies, averaging over $14 million in annual compensation, make roughly as much in a single day as their median employee earns in an entire year.

Thwarted Intelligence Disorder
Dr. Naresh Jotwani – TRANSCEND Media Service, 28 Oct 2019

The deep-down sense of being boxed-in, and the outward display of greed, lust and vanity, form a deadly vicious cycle with no avenue of escape. Desperate antics – akin to rattling and banging the cage – only make matters worse; the only possible prognosis is senility. One is tempted to call this state of mind the “thwarted intelligence disorder” (TID); words such as “demonic” have been used for such conditions in earlier times.

David Arioch | Vegazeta – TRANSCEND Media Service, 28 Oct 2019

“Algumas pessoas mal informadas afirmam que os ativistas dos direitos animais são terroristas, mas essas pessoas simplesmente ignoram quem são os verdadeiros terroristas – as empresas e indústrias que torturam literalmente bilhões de animais a cada ano” – River Phoenix. Segundo River, é preciso que exista um movimento extremo quando o que acontece com os animais no cotidiano é tão extremo.

Investment Key Variable, though Not Any Type of Investment
Roberto Sansón Mizrahi | Opinion Sur – TRANSCEND Media Service, 28 Oct 2019

It is claimed that investment is a key variable in every development process, but, beware, not any type of investment. There are investments that contribute to the pursued development and others that hurt it or do not impact on the chosen path. Therefore, it is not right to talk about plain investment without delving into such heterogeneous universe and discerning which investment to make and who does it. Those are two intimately related critical issues.

Why Are the American People so Passive and Accepting of War?
Dave Alpert | Intrepid Report – TRANSCEND Media Service, 28 Oct 2019

23 Oct 2019 – We have not experienced war on our soil since the Civil War. The closest we came was the destruction and deaths caused by the 9/11 attack, a homegrown incident to gather support for US military action in the Middle East as it “does battle against terrorism”. The reality we refuse to recognize is that it is the US that is the biggest and most dangerous terrorist on the planet.

That We Live under a Dictatorship Is Now Unquestionable: The Assange Case
Eric Zuesse – TRANSCEND Media Service, 28 Oct 2019

23 Oct 2019 – The military-industrial complex didn’t entirely control the U.S. Government back in 1971 when its absolute right of censorship was rejected by the U.S. Supreme Court in the Pentagon Papers case; but, now, after 9/11, it finally does, and thus democracy has become totally eliminated in today’s America.

Stephen Knapp (Sri Nandanandana dasa) – TRANSCEND Media Service, 28 Oct 2019

Moksha is also called mukti, which essentially means to attain freedom from any further forms of differentiated, temporal, and ordinary material existence in the mortal world. It will be up to everyone to figure out how to defend us all without violence.” As entrenched as the military is in our society and minds, civilians can defend a society without using violence.

13 Oct 2019 – It took the withdrawal of the Nelly Sachs Prize to make me familiar with the fine literary achievements and compassionate politics of Kamila Shamsie. Selfishly, I cannot thank the Dortmund City Council enough for its outrageous behavior, evidently canceling the award because a right-wing newspaper outed Shamsie as a supporter of the BDS Campaign. I can imagine Shamsie’ feeling of hurt as well as disappointment as this incident unfolded.
