A Tight Grip on Our Nuclear Toys
Robert C. Koehler | Common Wonders – TRANSCEND Media Service, 11 Nov 2019

6 Nov 2019 – The interests of the planet as a whole could easily disappear as anything but idealistic, ignorable abstractions. Disarmament? Give me a break. Not when regional powers are “challenging American hegemony.” Add to this the transnational, corporate interest in militarism. There’s no money in peace, a black hole, the lull between wars. Money doesn’t start to flow until the bullets and the bombs start to fly.

Gary Saul Morson | Encyclopædia Britannica – TRANSCEND Media Service, 11 Nov 2019

Dostoyevsky is usually regarded as one of the finest novelists who ever lived. Literary modernism, existentialism, and various schools of psychology, theology, and literary criticism have been profoundly shaped by his ideas. His works are often called prophetic because he so accurately predicted how Russia’s revolutionaries would behave if they came to power. In his time, he was also renowned for his activity as a journalist.

Casteism: Is It the Scourge of Hinduism, or the Perversion of a Legitimate Vedic System?
Stephen Knapp (Sri Nandanandana dasa) – TRANSCEND Media Service, 11 Nov 2019

Casteism in India has gotten a lot of criticism, and rightly so. The way casteism is at present should not even exist. Casteism as we find it today is now nothing more than a misrepresentation and misinterpretation of a legitimate and progressive Vedic system known as varnashrama. However, we need to know the difference between the two, and then get rid of present-day casteism to again utilize the genuine and liberal form of social organization, known as varnashrama.

Protests in Haiti Signal Change Needed in US Foreign Policy
Jonathan Molina | The Daily Californian – TRANSCEND Media Service, 11 Nov 2019

There have already been several failed coup attempts against the Maduro government in Venezuela, and all its assets have been frozen. Crippling economic policy against Venezuela has deeply harmed the people that the US claims to protect. If it were to be true to its often-stated goal of advancing democracy and protecting the worlds’ poor, Haiti’s government would be the focus of human rights intervention to defend unarmed civilians against repressive government violence.

How to Crush a Bankers’ Dictatorship: A Lesson from 1933
Matthew Ehret | Strategic Culture Foundation – TRANSCEND Media Service, 11 Nov 2019

8 Nov 2019 – While everyone knows that the 1929 market crash unleashed four years of hell in America which quickly spread across Europe under the great depression, not many people have realized that this was a controlled blowout. While I’m not arguing that a systemic change is not vital to protect people from the effects of a general meltdown of the $1.2 trillion derivatives bubble sometimes called “the western banking system”, what central bankers are proposing is a poison more deadly than the disease they promise to cure.

Is There a Place for Ethics in Smart Cities?
Dr Jaspal Kaur Sadhu Singh – TRANSCEND Media Service, 11 Nov 2019

The concern here lies in the question as to whether we are being too hasty in turning to technology to resolve all the problems that plague city-dwellers. “Smart Cities” seem to appeal to the modern sensibilities of progressiveness… Cities need to be sustainable, resilient, economically vibrant, inclusive and democratic. Technology being the mere scaffolding that lifts the structures of our society, cities cannot be built from technology up; they are built from the needs of the humans who reside within them.

With its focus on ‘history and activism from below’, this is a work of enormous significance. Developing further his original ideas on human rights in Palestine, media activism, public policies and popular, non-violent resistance, Mazin Qumsiyeh’s book is a must read for anyone interested in justice and how to produce the necessary breakthrough in the Israel-Palestine conflict.” — Prof. Nur Masalha

Ending Violence, Exploitation, Ecological Destruction and War: Creating a Culture of Peace
Robert J. Burrowes, Ph.D. – TRANSCEND Media Service, 11 Nov 2019

For those of us concerned with the struggle to create cultures of peace or, even, a world culture of peace, there are some fundamental questions to consider including the classic question discussed by two of humanity’s greats, Albert Einstein and Sigmund Freud–‘Why War?’ Peace entails far more than simply a state without military (including terrorist) violence and war. Beyond these forms of violence, many exponents of peace seek the end of other dimensions of what I call ‘visible’ violence.

Our Vanishing World (Part 3): Insects
Robert J. Burrowes, Ph.D. – TRANSCEND Media Service, 4 Nov 2019

About 12,000 years ago, late Stone Age humans precipitated the Neolithic (agricultural) revolution that marked the start of the steady rise to civilization. Coincidentally, this occurred at the same time as the beginning of what is now known as the Holocene Epoch, the geological epoch in which humans still live. However, since the industrial revolution commencing in about 1750, just 270 years ago, humans have been destroying Earth’s biosphere with such tremendous ferocity that the Earth we inherited at the beginning of the Holocene Epoch is vanishing before our eyes. And life is vanishing with it.

Nonviolence was the prevailing political theory in the movement, especially in the “direct action” wing which organized mass blockades and occupations at nuclear facilities. Nonviolence informed our tactics and strategies, our group processes, and our general ethos and outlook.

Banana Party–Serving Divinity
Dr Ravi P Bhatia – TRANSCEND Media Service, 4 Nov 2019

Why do people buy and serve bananas to monkeys? In the Hindu faith, Hanuman, the legendary follower of Lord Ram, looks like a monkey and can even jump over mountains and hills in the service of Ram Bhagwan. It is no surprise that many people who serve bananas to the hordes of monkeys feel that they are serving the brave Hanuman. In many places these animals have become a menace. But how to tackle the problem since faith is involved?

CIA Death Squads Responsible for Spike in Afghan Civilian Casualties
Bill Van Auken | WSWS – TRANSCEND Media Service, 4 Nov 2019

2 Nov 2019 – Civilian casualties have reached a record high in the 18-year-old US war in Afghanistan as the Trump administration has broken off talks with the Islamist insurgents of the Taliban and ordered a sharp escalation in US airstrikes and night raids by CIA-backed death squads. In Afghanistan, as in Syria, Trump’s promise to end Washington’s “forever wars” has amounted to empty demagogy.

The Metamorphosis of the Deep State
Edward Curtin – TRANSCEND Media Service, 4 Nov 2019

2 Nov 2019 – To think that the deep state is government employees just doing their patriotic duty is plain idiocy and plainer propaganda, just as denying its existence was. It is a trick, not the treat it is made to seem.

The Future of Human Rights: Regressive Trends and Restorative Prospects
Richard Falk | Global Justice in the 21st Century – TRANSCEND Media Service, 4 Nov 2019

31 Oct 2019 – The main objective of this essay is to sketch the profound challenges to human rights that arise from a series of interrelated and overlapping developments, and to give some sense that to restore and enhance human rights is a difficult undertaking that now seems almost impossible given the ultra-nationalist outlook of the governments of most leading states. Yet the future is uncertain, and will be influenced by what peoples variously situated choose to do or refrain from doing.

Did This Happen in the Home of Magna Carta?
John Pilger – TRANSCEND Media Service, 4 Nov 2019

28 Oct 2019 – The worst moment was one of a number of ‘worst’ moments. I have sat in many courtrooms and seen judges abuse their positions. This judge, Vanessa Baraitser – actually she isn’t a judge at all; she’s a magistrate – shocked all of us who were there. Her face was a progression of sneers and imperious indifference; she addressed Julian with an arrogance that reminded me of a magistrate presiding over apartheid South Africa’s Race Classification Board.

Caliph Closure: ‘He Died Like a Dog’
Pepe Escobar – Asia Times, 4 Nov 2019

28 Oct 2019 – The “died as a dog” movie can also be interpreted as the liquidation of a formerly useful asset that was a valued component of the gift that keeps on giving, the never-ending Global War on Terror. Other scarecrows, and other movies, await. Trump’s victory-lap movie version buries the embarrassing story of deploying tanks to ‘protect’ Syrian oilfields.

In Court: The Annihilation of Julian Assange
Amb. Craig Murray – TRANSCEND Media Service, 4 Nov 2019

22 Oct 2019 – I was deeply shaken while witnessing yesterday’s events in Westminster Magistrates Court. The campaign of demonisation and dehumanisation against Julian, based on government and media lie after government and media lie, has led to a situation where he can be slowly killed in public sight, and arraigned on a charge of publishing the truth about government wrongdoing, while receiving no assistance from “liberal” society. Unless Julian is released shortly he will be destroyed. If the state can do this, then who is next?

The Olive Tree–Not Just an Ordinary Tree
Mazin Qumsiyeh | DesertPeace – TRANSCEND Media Service, 28 Oct 2019

21 Oct 2019 – It is hard to describe to non-Palestinians what the olive tree means to us. My thoughts wonder to the Palestinians who lost their olive groves to the colonial settlement activity (over 1 million trees have been uprooted). The olive harvest is after all a ritual that borders on an act of worship (and maybe it is). Palestinians over the past 5000 years have cultivated olive trees and derived great benefit from these wonderful hardy trees.

Interpreting Turkey’s Military Operation in Syria
Richard Falk | Global Justice in the 21st Century – TRANSCEND Media Service, 28 Oct 2019

18 Oct 2019 – Ever since things started to go badly wrong in Syria after the uprising prompted by the 2011 Arab Spring, the situation has converted the customary fog of war into an impenetrable black box. None of the intervening political actors including Turkey, United States, Iran, Russia, Israel, the UAE, and Saudi Arabia calculated correctly, nor did the various non-state extremist groups associated with al Qaeda and later ISIS, as well as a variety of anti-Damascus Syrian insurgencies.

UK Judge Rejects Delay in Assange Extradition Case
Laura Tiernan | WSWS – TRANSCEND Media Service, 28 Oct 2019

22 Oct 2019 – Pilger told demonstrators: “The whole thing is a grotesque absurdity. There is an extradition law between this country and the United States. It states specifically that someone cannot be extradited if the offences are political… It is not a bit of agitprop, it is not an opinion, they ARE political. All but one charge is based on the 1917 Espionage Act, which was used to jail conscientious objectors during the First World War in the United States.”Pilger concluded: “The source of this is a rogue state—a state that ignores its own laws and international laws and the laws of this country.”
