Peace Education: Pedagogy of the Middle Class
Prof. George Kent – TRANSCEND Media Service, 5 Nov 2018

When I visited Paulo Freire at his Geneva office in 1975, I asked whether someone like me, concerned about justice issues, ought to leave my comfortable setting with the middle class in Hawai‘i and instead pick up a rifle and join the rebels in Latin America. (It was a hypothetical question.) Without hesitation, he said there are justice issues around you. Do the work where you are. Bloom where you are planted.

The Biofuels Deception: Going Hungry on the Green Carbon Diet
Okbazghi Yohannes | Monthly Review – TRANSCEND Media Service, 5 Nov 2018

There is by now no question among informed people that the Earth is undergoing severe climate change—soon to become catastrophic, if humans don’t take drastic measures to stop it. Heroically into the fray steps the biofuel industry, announcing to millions of anxious consumers that this eco-crisis can be averted if only they turn away from fossil fuels, to the saving power of synthetic bioproducts. But, although eliminating fossil fuels is essential, the manufacture of biofuels has far more to do with sating profit-hungry corporations than with saving the Earth.

Brazil’s Bolsonaro: A Monster Engineered by Our Media
Jonathan Cook – TRANSCEND Media Service, 5 Nov 2018

30 Oct 2018 – Social media and fake news are apparently the reasons Bolsonaro won at the ballot box. Without the gatekeepers in place to limit access to the “free press” the rabble has supposedly been freed to give expression to their innate bigotry. This is now the default consensus of the corporate media, whether in its rightwing incarnations or of the variety posing on the liberal-left end of the spectrum like the Guardian. The people are stupid, and we need to be protected from their base instincts. Social media, it is claimed, has unleashed humanity’s id.

Johan Galtung, a Pioneer: Conceptualizing Peace Journalism
Antonio C. S. Rosa, M.A. | Editor - TRANSCEND Media Service, 22 Oct 2018

Before the 19th century, we had “disease journalists” who reported in detail how epidemics were spreading and how people suffered. Today we have “health journalists” who write about current research on new cures and therapies, and inform about healthy lifestyles promoting health as a value. Similarly, the time has come for “peace journalists” to write not only about war, but also about its causes, prevention, and ways to restore peace by nonviolent means and promoting peace as a value. They need not invent themselves solutions to conflicts–in the same way that health journalists need not invent cures for diseases themselves; they ask specialists.
