The debate about nuclear power was similar to talking about a religion. It was seldom grounded in all the relevant facts- each side had a religious belief in their point of view boosted by whatever ad hoc facts supported their view. Because of that history, this 2017 World Nuclear Industry Status Report is perhaps the most decisive document in the history of nuclear power. The report makes clear, in telling detail, that the debate is over. Nuclear power has been eclipsed by the sun and the wind. These renewable, free-fuel sources are no longer a dream or a projection-they are a reality that are replacing nuclear as the preferred choice for new power plants worldwide.

Despite residents’ protests, US Forces Korea began installing four more THAAD missile launchers early Thursday [7 Sep] morning in the South Korean town of Seongju. The reintroduction of tactical nuclear weapons would greatly heighten the danger of nuclear war. In the extremely tense situation on the Korean Peninsula, the two militaries would have to take into account the possibility of a nuclear attack with just minutes of warning, exacerbating the risk of miscalculations or mistakes triggering a nuclear exchange.

In 2012, deadly riots between Muslims and the Buddhist majority forced more than 100,000 Rohingya into displacement camps where they have remained since. On 30 Aug U Wirathu, a Buddhist monk known for his sermons inciting hatred and violence against Muslims, gave a speech demanding all international NGOs be expelled from Rakhine State and martial law be established.

The war assumed near-genocidal proportions and has killed at least 14,000 civilians, maimed many thousands more, displaced 2 million and left at least 7.3 million on the brink of famine.
