Viktor Dedaj | Tlaxcala – TRANSCEND Media Service, 21 Aug 2017

En Venezuela (como en otros lugares), la diferencia entre una dictadura de derecha y una dictadura de izquierda es la siguiente: bajo una dictadura de derecha, los opositores «desaparecen». Charlottesville through a Glass Darkly
Richard Falk | Global Justice in the 21st Century – TRANSCEND Media Service, 21 Aug 2017

Anti-Semitism, and its links to Nazism and Fascism, and now to Trumpism, are genuinely menacing, and should encourage rational minds to reconsider any willingness to being manipulated for polemic purposes by ultra Zionists. We can also only wonder about the moral, legal, and political compass of ardent Zionists who so irresponsibly label Israel’s critics and activist opponents as anti-Semites, and thus confuse and bewilder the public as to the true nature of anti-Semitism as racial hatred directed at Jews.

Meanwhile, Around the World
Johan Galtung – TRANSCEND Media Service, 21 Aug 2017

There seems to be a new European system for calculating the GNP. Not only is armament included, but also the money that goes into research and development for war. Also included are prostitution and drugs, as “services.” Anything offered and demanded in return for money is in. How does that make us feel about economic growth? To be among the “per capita” by which this monster coming out of sickening economistic minds is divided?

7 Aug 2017 – In the late 1990s and the 2000s, Latin America experienced a “pink tide” of sorts, with a number of self-proclaimed socialist governments coming to power. Andre Vltchek | Dissident Voice – TRANSCEND Media Service, 21 Aug 2017

19 Aug 2017 – After WWII, the West had one huge ‘problem’ on its hands: all three most populous Muslim countries on Earth – Egypt, Iran and Indonesia – were clearly moving in one similar direction, joining a group of patriotic, peaceful and tolerant nations. Iran fell first, in 1953. Actually, it did not fall; it was brutally destroyed. According to the logic of the Empire, Iran had to be derailed and ruined, in order to prevent a so-called ‘domino effect’.

On 7 July, the United Nations adopted the “Nuclear Weapons Treaty” with an overwhelming majority. To our disappointment, however, Japan did not join the 122 countries, or two-thirds of the United Nations member countries. Japan still remains an outlier, betraying the hopes of atomic bomb survivors from Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Towards a United Nations Parliamentary Assembly
David Adams | Culture of Peace News Network – TRANSCEND Media Service, 7 Aug 2017

2 Aug 2017 – We need a profound reform of the UN so that it is managed more directly by the peoples of the world – through cities or parliaments instead of the present Member States that are inextricably linked to the culture of war. A significant first step towards such a reform would be the proposed parliamentary assembly of the UN (UNPA). There are proposals from the European Parliament, the Pan-African Parliament and an international conference of around 300 chief justices, judges, legal experts and ambassadors from nearly 60 countries predominantly from the Global South.

Jodi Rudoren Admits Palestinians Experience ‘Apartheid’ – But Not in NYT
Jonathan Cook – TRANSCEND Media Service, 7 Aug 2017

An obvious question arises: why have we not heard about Jodi Rudoren’s incendiary view that Israel is practising apartheid in the pages of the New York Times? In her four years as Jerusalem bureau chief, she never wrote an op-ed or analysis expressing that view, or gave a voice to experts in Israel and abroad who have reached a similar conclusion.

Wistful Eyes
Uri Avnery | Gush Shalom – TRANSCEND Media Service, 7 Aug 2017

From whatever angle one looks at it, the death sentence is a barbaric and stupid measure. Whenever I think about this subject, the immortal lines of Oscar Wilde in his “Ballad of Reading Gaol” come to my mind. Observing a fellow prisoner, a convicted murderer, awaiting his execution, Wilde wrote: I never saw a man who looked With such a wistful eye Upon the little tent of blue Which prisoners call the sky…

What Are the Essential Differences between Communism and Capitalism?
Maung Zarni – TRANSCEND Media Service, 7 Aug 2017

Communism treats the notion of Private Property as a major obstacle to building its classless heaven on earth attempts to make Saints out of humans. In the process the Beasts inside fought back and destroyed the Communist Mission and devoured its Missionaries. In sharp contrast, Capitalism rests on the Inalienably Holy Idea of Private Property attempts to pursue its Sacred Mission of Wealth Accumulation by unleashing the Beasts in humans, thereby triggering the unstoppable process of all around destruction.

(Italiano) Venezuela, profezie che si autoavverano
Gennaro Carotenuto | Giornalismo Partecipativo – TRANSCEND Media Service, 7 Aug 2017

On the Beach 2017: The Beckoning of Nuclear War
John Pilger – TRANSCEND Media Service, 7 Aug 2017

This is the way the world ends
Not with a bang but a whimper
These lines from T.S. Eliot’s poem The Hollow Men appear at the beginning of Nevil Shute’s novel On the Beach, which left me close to tears. Published in 1957 at the height of the Cold War when too many writers were silent or cowed, it is a masterpiece. At first the language suggests a genteel relic; yet nothing I have read on nuclear war is as unyielding in its warning. No book is more urgent.

Survivors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki
Atomic Heritage Foundation – TRANSCEND Media Service, 7 Aug 2017

By the end of 1945, the atomic bombings of Japan had killed an estimated 140,000 people at Hiroshima and 74,000 at Nagasaki, including those who died from radiation poisoning. Often lost in those numbers are the experiences of the survivors, known as hibakusha (literally “atomic bomb-affected people”).
