We asked three analysts to describe some of the institutional innovations implemented in Venezuela, Bolivia and Ecuador during this time, and to reflect on the relationship between organized citizenry and the state in these transitions in order to elicit lessons learned.

While Japan was still trying to comprehend this devastation, the United States dropped another atomic bomb, nicknamed “Fat Man,” on the Japanese city of Nagasaki, killing an estimated 40,000 people immediately and another 20,000 to 40,000 in the months following the explosion.

Not with a bang but a whimper
These lines from T.S. Eliot’s poem The Hollow Men appear at the beginning of Nevil Shute’s novel On the Beach, which left me close to tears. Published in 1957 at the height of the Cold War when too many writers were silent or cowed, it is a masterpiece. At first the language suggests a genteel relic; yet nothing I have read on nuclear war is as unyielding in its warning. No book is more urgent.
