U.S. Financial Regulations Increase Starvation among Syria’s Children
Franklin Lamb – TRANSCEND Media Service, 23 May 2016

As of May 15, 2016, according to Save the Children and an assortment of UN agencies and NGO’s, nearly 7 million people are displaced within Syria, half of them are children and more than two million of the youngsters are at risk of becoming ill, malnourished, abused, or exploited. One inexcusable action that is today targeting Syria’s children, even if inadvertently, are the US economic sanctions against the country’s leadership.

Hawaiian Kingdom Blog – TRANSCEND Media Service, 23 May 2016

Under the principles of international law, the USA was capable of committing war crimes when the Hawaiian Kingdom was invaded and occupied since August 12, 1898. The criminal conduct committed by German, Austrian and Bulgarian officials against Serbia and its people are very similar to the criminal conduct by the United States after 1898 against the Hawaiian Kingdom and its people.

Unquestioned Bias in Governance from Direction of Reading?
Anthony Judge – TRANSCEND Media Service, 23 May 2016

Political Implications of Reading from Left-to-Right, Right-to-Left, or Top-Down – The text on which much global governance is primarily dependent is written from left-to-write (top-down), following the pattern determined in the Greece from which democracy emerged. Text is written otherwise in other cultures, notably in Arabic and Hebrew (right-to-left), or in cultures of the East (vertically, whether left-to-right, or right-to-left).

North Korea, Following China and India, Pledges No-First-Use of Nuclear Weapons. So Could Obama
John LaForge | PeaceVoice – TRANSCEND Media Service, 16 May 2016

15 May 2016 – North Korea’s May 7 declaration that it would not be first to use nuclear weapons was met with official derision instead of relief and applause. Conspiracy Theories, Disinformation Agents, and the CIA
Gary G. Kohls, MD | Duty to Warn – TRANSCEND Media Service, 16 May 2016

It is quite easy for a disinformation agent to spin a rich disinformation tale and then craft several different versions of the tale with new ‘facts’ to support the story in each one. These tales are usually a good mix of verifiable facts and cleverly designed lies, so that people who check the ‘facts’ tend to believe the lies that are mixed in. The disinformation agent has only to feed these versions of his tale to several of the many conspiracy-oriented websites out there, and it’s all over the Internet – but not on reliable websites. They will use pseudonyms to join in on the discussions generated by their “news” so that they can manipulate the direction that comments take.

Max Newman, WSWS – TRANSCEND Media Service, 9 May 2016

4 May 2016 – Hodan Yasi, a young refugee woman from Somalia, is in a critical condition after setting herself alight on Nauru on Monday [2 May], just three days after a 23-year-old Iranian refugee, Omid Masoumali, died of injuries sustained in a similar act last week. These events further underscore the inhuman conditions and denial of basic legal and democratic rights inflicted on the nearly 1,500 refugees held into these facilities, which health professionals have likened to concentration camps.

Mel Gurtov | PeaceVoice – TRANSCEND Media Service, 9 May 2016

The best and only chance of dissuading Kim Jong-un from continuing on the path of weapons modernization, which is both dangerous and ruinous in terms of human development, is to put before him a package of alternative incentives— a peace treaty to end the Korean War, security guarantees, sustainable energy options, and meaningful economic aid.

While the plight of the Rohingya has come into the media spotlight recently, there has been little coordinated effort to mitigate the crisis. Unless there is greater security and support for Rohingya in Myanmar and increased rehabilitation of these refugees across Southeast Asia, the Rohingya refugee crisis will continue to be one of the greatest and most overlooked humanitarian disasters of our time.

May: This Month in Nuclear Threat History
Jeffrey W. Mason | Nuclear Age Peace Foundation - TRANSCEND Media Service, 9 May 2016

May 1, 1962 – A nuclear test code-named Beryl was conducted in French-occupied Algeria. However, due to improper sealing of the underground shaft, a spectacular mushroom cloud burst through the concrete cap venting highly radioactive dust and gas into the atmosphere. The plume climbed to 8,500 feet high and radiation was detected hundreds of miles away. This was just one of 210 nuclear weapons tests conducted by the French government in north Africa and the Pacific region in the period from 1960-96.

The Brazilian Left: Business Accommodation and Social Debacle
Prof. James Petras – TRANSCEND Media Service, 9 May 2016

In ‘Cardoso’s Brazil: A Land for Sale’ (2003) we described how President Cardoso had sold off the major public resources, banks, petroleum and iron resources to foreign capital for rock bottom prices. The 2002 election of President Lula Da Silva of the Workers’ Party did not reverse Cardoso’s sell-out. Indeed, Lula accepted his predecessor’s neo-liberal policies – embellished them – and set about forging an alliance between the Workers’ Party and the economic elites, replacing Cardoso’s Party!

Those Funny Anti-Semites
Uri Avnery – TRANSCEND Media Service, 9 May 2016

Until world-war II, Hitler could not dream of killing the Jews en masse. He had to be satisfied with driving them out of Germany, or out of Europe, as had happened several times before – in Spain, in England and in many other places. The obvious destination was Palestine, but Palestine was ruled by Great Britain, which let only a handful of Jews in, for fear of Arab reactions. At the time another possibility gained popularity with the Nazi leadership: transport all the Jews to Madagascar, which was part of the French empire.

Why Obama Prioritizes Ousting Assad over Defeating Syria’s Jihadists
Eric Zuesse | Washington’s Blog – TRANSCEND Media Service, 9 May 2016

That report went on to document, essentially, that U.S. President Barack Obama is continuing his efforts to replace the only secular, non-sectarian government in the Middle East, that of the Ba’athist Party, which has always been the only non-religious political party in the Arabic world — everything else in Arabia has been fundamentalist-Sunni, to at least some extent (enough for even the least-fundamentalist of America’s Arab allies to cooperate with al-Nusra, which is Al Qaeda in Syria).

Marvin Brown presents a model for the next system in which economic activity is based not solely on property ownership or the free market but on civic membership in a “global civil society.” He advocates a new approach to system change that would re-frame our social structures around civic relations. Jean-Marie Muller – TRANSCEND Media Service, 2 May 2016
