A World without the Nation-State
David Adams | Transition to a Culture of Peace – TRANSCEND Media Service, 6 Jan 2020

2 Jan 2020 – The state is a culture of war. In this case the state is the United States and their culture of war is shown in their role in the overthrow of President Morales of Bolivia (precisely because he was promoting a culture of peace) and their threat to punish Julian Assange (precisely because he revealed the secrets of their culture of war.) Not to mention that the states of the world are unable to seriously attack the problem of global warming, and the USA is the worst in this regard.

Trump’s Ordered Assassinations: Cruel and Inhumane Breach of International Law
Mairead Maguire, Nobel Peace Laureate | The Peace People – TRANSCEND Media Service, 6 Jan 2020

‘There are those who benefit from war, the militarists, the arms dealers, the corporate media/military industrial complex, but those who really pay for militarism and wars are the people and the tax of the poor.  The propaganda and lies of of war are being spread and this time the target is Iran, just like US/UK/NATO carried out wars against Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, etc.  Let us, the people, learn lessons from the past and unite and mobilize calling for no war against Iran. USA troops out of Shannon and out of Iraq! Yes to nonviolence, peace and dialogue!  Let the people unite together to stop war, remembering that there is power in truth and love is stronger than hate.’

Afghanistan War – The Crime of the Century
Ron Paul | Ron Paul Institute for Peace and Prosperity – TRANSCEND Media Service, 30 Dec 2019

16 Dec 2019 – “We were devoid of a fundamental understanding of Afghanistan. We didn’t know what we were doing.” So said Gen. Douglas Lute, who oversaw the US war on Afghanistan under Presidents Bush and Obama. Eighteen years into the longest war in US history, we are finally finding out, thanks to thousands of pages of classified interviews on the war published by the Washington Post last week, that General Lute’s cluelessness was shared by virtually everyone involved in the war.

Four Criteria for Differentiating Faith-Based Entities
Abbas Aroua | Cordoba Peace Institute Geneva – TRANSCEND Media Service, 23 Dec 2019

Religious currents, especially Islamic schools of thought, are often considered as monolithic blocs, and sometimes opposed to each other. In fact, not only do some academic and political elites regard various currents of Islamic thought as a form of extremism, but they also do the same with regard to the practice of religion itself.

Cultures of Peace: The Hidden Side of History
Anne Goodman | Peace Magazine – TRANSCEND Media Service, 9 Dec 2019

The “culture of peace” may be a phrase that has entered our lexicon only recently, but the concepts behind it are not new. In fact, they are ideas that are particularly familiar to Elise Boulding, and her book, Cultures of Peace: The Hidden Side of History, is both an encapsulation of her life work and a cogent description of the culture of peace.

The Olive Tree–Not Just an Ordinary Tree
Mazin Qumsiyeh | DesertPeace – TRANSCEND Media Service, 28 Oct 2019

21 Oct 2019 – It is hard to describe to non-Palestinians what the olive tree means to us. My thoughts wonder to the Palestinians who lost their olive groves to the colonial settlement activity (over 1 million trees have been uprooted). The olive harvest is after all a ritual that borders on an act of worship (and maybe it is). Palestinians over the past 5000 years have cultivated olive trees and derived great benefit from these wonderful hardy trees.

The International Day of Peace
David Adams | Transition to a Culture of Peace – TRANSCEND Media Service, 7 Oct 2019

2 Oct 2019 – The International Day of Peace, as officially proclaimed by the UN, is the most universal action for peace in our times, and it contributes to the consciousness from the culture of war to a culture of peace. It would be good to be able to measure the IDP actions each year, to know if they are increasing or not, and to know if this is occurring throughout the world, or more in some regions than in others.

Pathways to Peace
Mairead Maguire, Nobel Peace Laureate – TRANSCEND Media Service, 7 Oct 2019

I am very hopeful for the future as I believe if we can reject militarism in its entirety as the aberration/dysfunction it is in human history, and all of us who no matter what area of change we work in, can unite and agree we want to see a demilitarized unarmed world.  We can do this together.  Let us remember in human history, people abolished slavery, piracy, we can abolish militarism and war, and relegate these barbaric ways into the dustbin of history.

Peace People Founder Ciaran McKeown Dead at 76
Mairead Maguire, Nobel Peace Laureate | The Peace People – TRANSCEND Media Service, 9 Sep 2019

It is with deep sadness that I heard of the death of my dear friend and co-peace worker Ciaran McKeown on 1 Sep 2019. When the Peace People started in Aug l976 at the height of the troubles in Northern Ireland, it was Ciaran, a political journalist, who courageously took the peace leadership–giving up his job and becoming a volunteer in spite of the fact that his fifth child was soon due–and joined myself and Betty Williams in co-founding the Peace People. Peace as a Profession and New Peace Action Roles
Johan Galtung | PRIO Peace Research Institute Oslo – TRANSCEND Media Service, 9 Sep 2019

1974 – Today we see relatively clearly that there are liberal and Marxist conceptions of peace, and perhaps we also see more clearly than before that «liberalism vs. Marxism» is a false dichotomy—although we still live under the pressure of the false dichotomies, and particularly in the thinking about peace. Hence, this essay is an effort to try to indicate, at a very simple, common sense level, that both views are fruitful in conceiving of new forms of peace action, and that they in a sense reinforce each other.

And Ye Shall Inherit the Whirlwind or Learn to Live in Gratitude and Grace (Parts 1 to 3)
Stefan Schindler | Engaging Peace – TRANSCEND Media Service, 15 Jul 2019

We are free to become free. This is the lesson taught by Socrates. It is also the essence of Buddhism. The word “Buddha” means “awake.” Awakening, as Plato would say, is recollecting the sanity we were born with. Nietzsche quotes Pindar: “Become who you are.” We are inextricable strands in the holistic web of being and becoming. Said the poet Byron: “Are not the mountains, waves, and skies, a part of me and of my soul, as I of them?” John Lennon said: “I am the walrus.”

What Does It Mean to Teach Peace?
Ellen Birkett Lindeen | Peace Voice – TRANSCEND Media Service, 15 Apr 2019

[Note from TMS editor]: Peace does not mean the absence of war; that is called negative peace. Positive peace is based on equitable distribution of resources, restoration of relationships, the creation of social systems that serve the needs of the whole population and the constructive resolution of conflict. To work for a sustainable peace, people focus on factors to generate positive peace, rather than simply to avoid violence. [Galtung 1996].

How to Prepare for a Global Financial Crash: Rural-Urban Continuum and Electric Vehicles
David Adams | Transition to a Culture of Peace – TRANSCEND Media Service, 4 Mar 2019

24 Oct 2018 – These questions could all be settled with negotiations, but President !#&$! wants to get contracts for new missiles signed the and the gusher of military spending pumping, so that electoral votes are bought and paid for this year, and in 2020. Last Feb. 12, the Prez boasted, “We’re increasing arsenals of virtually every weapon. If they’re not going to stop, we’re going to be so far ahead of anybody else in nuclear like you’ve never seen before.”

(Français) La solution souffle dans le vent
David Adams | Transition to a Culture of Peace – TRANSCEND Media Service, 15 Oct 2018

The Answer Is Blowing in the Wind
David Adams | Transition to a Culture of Peace – TRANSCEND Media Service, 8 Oct 2018

7 Oct 2018 – I came across a piece about two meetings at the UN on the same day concerning nuclear weapons. The major nuclear states (USA, France, UK, China and Russia) all went to a meeting for non-proliferation and boycotted the meeting for nuclear disarmament. As the article correctly concludes, the nuclear states “place very little priority on their obligations to eliminate their own weapons of mass destruction, focusing instead on preventing others from acquiring such weapons.”

Peace Poll Reveals People Think Conflict Prevention Is Better than Cure
Harriet Lamb | Peace News – TRANSCEND Media Service, 1 Oct 2018

20 Sep 2018 – Asked where their governments should spend more to promote peace, people gave top ranking to ‘dealing with the reasons why people fight in the first place’. This was strongly followed by ‘teaching peace, tolerance and conflict resolution in schools’. Again, military interventions had the least support.

Campaign to Get ‘Peacebuilding’ in Dictionaries Gains Traction
Peace News – TRANSCEND Media Service, 1 Oct 2018

29 Sep 2018 – ‘Peacebuilding’ was coined in the 1970’s by Norwegian scholar Johan Galtung, who defines it as projects that involve “concrete action” towards peace. The word gets 7 million hits on Google, but is not in most dictionaries. Now a campaign has started to get ‘peacebuilding’ included.

Northern Ireland: Squandering a Future
Mairead Maguire, Nobel Peace Laureate | The Peace People – TRANSCEND Media Service, 24 Sep 2018

I want to challenge everyone to look at their children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews and question: how big is their division? Gone are the days of fear and threat. So where does the problem lie? I believe the problem lies in the older generations who have suffered terribly on all sides through violence and fear. My generation has a responsibility not to restrain the youth by our bigotry and division.

Can’t We Just Leave Syria Alone?
Ron Paul | Ron Paul Institute for Peace and Prosperity – TRANSCEND Media Service, 10 Sep 2018

3 Sep 2018 – The U.S. Is Defending al-Qaeda in Idlib – Assad was supposed to be gone already. President Obama thought it would be just another “regime change” operation and perhaps Assad would end up like Saddam Hussein or Yanukovych. Or maybe even Gaddafi. The US spent billions to get rid of him and even provided weapons and training to the kinds of radicals that attacked the United States on 9/11.

Nuclear Abolition: The Road from Armageddon to Transformation
David Krieger | Nuclear Age Peace Foundation – TRANSCEND Media Service, 10 Sep 2018

10 Sep 2018 – The sunlight-blocking dust generated by the detonation of, say, 300 thermonuclear weapons in a war between the US and Russia could trigger a new Ice Age, dropping global temperatures to the lowest levels in 18,000 years, and leaving civilization utterly destroyed. Those who would survive the blast, heat, and radiation of nuclear war would live in a nuclear winter of freezing temperatures and perpetual darkness. The survivors would likely envy the dead.

The Tip of the Radiation Disaster Iceberg
John LaForge | PeaceVoice – TRANSCEND Media Service, 10 Sep 2018

3 Sep 2018 – The World Nuclear Association says its goal is “to increase global support for nuclear energy” and it repeatedly claims on its website: “There have only been three major accidents across 16,000 cumulative reactor-years of operation in 32 countries.” … Some of the world’s other major accidental radiation releases indicate that the Big Three are just the tip of the iceberg.

The Paradox of the United Nations: Peace vs. Culture of Peace
David Adams | Transition to a Culture of Peace – TRANSCEND Media Service, 3 Sep 2018

2 Sep 2018 – If we consider the purpose for which the United Nations was formed: “to save succeeding generations from the scourge of war,” it is failing badly. This spring, when we hoped that the UN would convene a High-Level Conference on Nuclear Disarmament, the meeting was cancelled due to pressure from the United States and its allies.

Declaration of Solidarity with Rohingya and Call for Myanmar Government to Be Investigated by the ICC
Mairead Maguire, Nobel Peace Laureate | Peace People – TRANSCEND Media Service, 27 Aug 2018

One young woman, Fatima (20), told us how Myanmar soldiers entered their village and came into her home. They shot her husband, made her carry her six month- old baby girl down to the lake where they threw the child into the pond and drowned her. They took Fatima back to her home; several soldiers held her down and constantly raped her until she became unconscious. They carried her outside to the field where they left her for dead. She was saved by an elderly Rohingya woman who helped her get across the border into Bangladesh. – Rohingya Genocide Day 25 Aug 2018

Movement for Sustainable Development: Model for Culture of Peace?
David Adams | Transition to a Culture of Peace – TRANSCEND Media Service, 6 Aug 2018

2 Aug 2018 – Already we see that the paradigm of a culture of peace, as opposed to a culture of war, is becoming internalized in the consciousness of a large proportion of humanity. Can we not expect that the closer we come to a collapse of the present system, the more it will become evident that wise financial investment should seek out productive sectors instead of militarized sectors of the economy? If and when this occurs, then the time will be ripe for a social revolution from the culture of war to a culture of peace.

What a Green and Peaceful Future Could Look Like
Paula Tejón Carbajal | Greenpeace – TRANSCEND Media Service, 23 Jul 2018

19 Jul 2018 – We’re experiencing a deep systemic disconnection: an ecological, social and spiritual cultural divide. There’s a discernible disconnect between the infinite growth imperative and the finite resources of planet Earth; between private ownership and the best societal use of property; between GDP and well-being. “We cannot solve problems with the same kind of thinking that created them.” — Albert Einstein

“Slow News” vs “Fast History”
David Adams | Transition to a Culture of Peace – TRANSCEND Media Service, 9 Jul 2018

2 Jul 2018 – This blog last month suggested that history is moving much faster than we think and that the collapse of the American empire is likely to come within the next two years. This leads me to the question: Can the slow development of the culture of peace make it possible for a transition from the culture of war to a culture of peace when the American empire crashes?
