Nuclear Abolition: The Road from Armageddon to Transformation
David Krieger | Nuclear Age Peace Foundation – TRANSCEND Media Service, 10 Sep 2018

10 Sep 2018 – The sunlight-blocking dust generated by the detonation of, say, 300 thermonuclear weapons in a war between the US and Russia could trigger a new Ice Age, dropping global temperatures to the lowest levels in 18,000 years, and leaving civilization utterly destroyed. Those who would survive the blast, heat, and radiation of nuclear war would live in a nuclear winter of freezing temperatures and perpetual darkness. The survivors would likely envy the dead.

The Tip of the Radiation Disaster Iceberg
John LaForge | PeaceVoice – TRANSCEND Media Service, 10 Sep 2018

3 Sep 2018 – The World Nuclear Association says its goal is “to increase global support for nuclear energy” and it repeatedly claims on its website: “There have only been three major accidents across 16,000 cumulative reactor-years of operation in 32 countries.” … Some of the world’s other major accidental radiation releases indicate that the Big Three are just the tip of the iceberg.

The Paradox of the United Nations: Peace vs. Culture of Peace
David Adams | Transition to a Culture of Peace – TRANSCEND Media Service, 3 Sep 2018

2 Sep 2018 – If we consider the purpose for which the United Nations was formed: “to save succeeding generations from the scourge of war,” it is failing badly. This spring, when we hoped that the UN would convene a High-Level Conference on Nuclear Disarmament, the meeting was cancelled due to pressure from the United States and its allies.

Declaration of Solidarity with Rohingya and Call for Myanmar Government to Be Investigated by the ICC
Mairead Maguire, Nobel Peace Laureate | Peace People – TRANSCEND Media Service, 27 Aug 2018

One young woman, Fatima (20), told us how Myanmar soldiers entered their village and came into her home. They shot her husband, made her carry her six month- old baby girl down to the lake where they threw the child into the pond and drowned her. They took Fatima back to her home; several soldiers held her down and constantly raped her until she became unconscious. They carried her outside to the field where they left her for dead. She was saved by an elderly Rohingya woman who helped her get across the border into Bangladesh. – Rohingya Genocide Day 25 Aug 2018

Movement for Sustainable Development: Model for Culture of Peace?
David Adams | Transition to a Culture of Peace – TRANSCEND Media Service, 6 Aug 2018

2 Aug 2018 – Already we see that the paradigm of a culture of peace, as opposed to a culture of war, is becoming internalized in the consciousness of a large proportion of humanity. Can we not expect that the closer we come to a collapse of the present system, the more it will become evident that wise financial investment should seek out productive sectors instead of militarized sectors of the economy? If and when this occurs, then the time will be ripe for a social revolution from the culture of war to a culture of peace.

What a Green and Peaceful Future Could Look Like
Paula Tejón Carbajal | Greenpeace – TRANSCEND Media Service, 23 Jul 2018

19 Jul 2018 – We’re experiencing a deep systemic disconnection: an ecological, social and spiritual cultural divide. There’s a discernible disconnect between the infinite growth imperative and the finite resources of planet Earth; between private ownership and the best societal use of property; between GDP and well-being. “We cannot solve problems with the same kind of thinking that created them.” — Albert Einstein

“Slow News” vs “Fast History”
David Adams | Transition to a Culture of Peace – TRANSCEND Media Service, 9 Jul 2018

2 Jul 2018 – This blog last month suggested that history is moving much faster than we think and that the collapse of the American empire is likely to come within the next two years. This leads me to the question: Can the slow development of the culture of peace make it possible for a transition from the culture of war to a culture of peace when the American empire crashes?

Fukushima’s “Hot Particles” Travelled Extreme Distances
John LaForge | PeaceVoice – TRANSCEND Media Service, 9 Jul 2018

3 Jul 2018 – “Cesium found 375 miles from Japanese plant,” read the headline in the Japanese daily paper Yomiuri Shimbun. Proponents of nuclear power still get away with denying that inhaled or ingested exposures cause harm. This is because when the cancers begin appearing 10, 15 or 20 years from exposure, no one can to prove they were caused by Fukushima’s hot particles. “Got cancer?” they ask. “Not our fault. Nuclear power is safe.”

21 Jun 2018 – “The Business Plan for Peace: Building a World without War” was written by Scilla Elworthy, the founder of Peace Direct. It is “for those who feel powerless in the face of what they see in the news, for those who want to step out of helplessness and find out how they can apply their personal skills to do something about the challenges facing us”. It offers a roadmap to building peace with ourselves and with others, though it is intended for a bigger picture, one of peace among nations and within them.

Why There Is So Much Anger
David Adams | Transition to a Culture of Peace – TRANSCEND Media Service, 11 Jun 2018

7 Jun 2018 – Wherever we turn, people are angry. In France and United States where I live, voters are angry and turn their anger against immigrants and people of color. And they vote for the Front National and for Donald Trump. And the struggle in the US between students protesting school massacres, gun sales and the National Rifle Association is fueled by anger on both sides. We are going through an especially dangerous period of history, and we need to analyze its causes and possible solutions.

14 May 2018 – The U.S. tested a Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missile carrying a mock nuclear warhead early morning today from Vandenberg Air Force Base. Trump Withdraws U.S. from Iran Nuclear Deal: There Will Be Negative Consequences
Nuclear Age Peace Foundation – TRANSCEND Media Service, 21 May 2018

The decision to withdraw from the treaty:

* Makes war between the U.S. and Iran more likely.
* Separates the U.S. from its major allies.
* Shows U.S. commitments are not reliable.
* Further reinforces lack of U.S. leadership in the world.

Catalunya: Culture of War or Culture of Peace?
David Adams | Culture of Peace News Network – TRANSCEND Media Service, 6 Nov 2017

1 Nov 2017 – It seems that the people of Catalunya will vote in December whether to declare independence from Spain, i.e. to form a separate state. If someone were to ask my advice about this election, I would say that it risks becoming a decision to move Catalunya towards the culture of war. There are good alternative for Catalunya, apart from secession.

Niranjan Sahoo | Carnegie Endowment for International Peace – TRANSCEND Media Service, 6 Nov 2017

India’s muted reaction to the Rohingya exodus from Myanmar/Burma is worthy of note, as there had been high expectations that it would help diffuse this state-orchestrated humanitarian crisis.

Norway’s Parliament Must Change Its Routine for Selection of the Nobel Committee and Legislators Must Comply with the Law
Fredrik S. Heffermehl | Nobel Peace Prize Watch – TRANSCEND Media Service, 30 Oct 2017

23 Oct 2017 – The Storting must choose those best suited to promote Nobel’s intention. The prize has long been disconnected from the peace ideas Nobel wished to support; it has lacked direction, idea, and of will to challenge the belief in military power. A promising winner for 2017 is reason for hope that the prize will improve. The parliament will select a new Nobel Committee only in a month’s time–and we fear the worst.

12 Oct 2017 – With his speech today–half an hour ago–U.S. President Trump has taken a huge step into uncharted territories. One that implies a 60-75% risk of leading to a US attack on Iran. Behind him stand the hardline militarists whom he has himself appointed. Indeed, God help America! Mostly from itself!

World Peace Foundation – TRANSCEND Media Service, 25 Sep 2017

September 2017’s “employee of the month” is Aung San Suu Kyi, awarded this month for her refusal to recognize the assault against the Rohingya population of Myanmar for what it is: a massive state-sponsored campaign of violence against a minority group. In lieu of a WPF explanation of the awardee, however, we re-post the below “Open Letter to Daw Aung San Suu Kyi” written by Burmese activists.

Desmond Tutu: Dearly Beloved Younger Sister Aung San Suu Kyi
Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Nobel Peace Laureate – TRANSCEND Media Service, 11 Sep 2017

I am now elderly, decrepit and formally retired, but breaking my vow to remain silent on public affairs out of profound sadness about the plight of the Muslim minority in your country, the Rohingya. In my heart you are a dearly beloved younger sister. For years I had a photograph of you on my desk to remind me of the injustice and sacrifice you endured out of your love and commitment for Myanmar’s people. You symbolised righteousness. In 2010 we rejoiced at your freedom from house arrest, and in 2012 we celebrated your election as leader of the opposition.

6 Sep 2017 – The vast majority of people in Northern Ireland, whose main desire is to live in peace together, earn a living and raise their families, are currently living in a no-man’s land. We are living now in a political vacuum, which leaves our community vulnerable to paramilitarism. But it does not have to be like this.

Echoes of Reagan: Another Nuclear Buildup
Mel Gurtov | PeaceVoice – TRANSCEND Media Service, 4 Sep 2017

Thirty years ago Americans endured an absurd expansion of the US nuclear-weapon force under President Reagan. The announced weapons modernization program was accompanied by a crazy talk from his advisers about the potential to fight and win a nuclear war. So here we are evidently back to the future as the Trump administration forges ahead with nuclear “modernization,” without a set strategy for the weapons but with billions of dollars to burn.

72 Years after Hiroshima, Where Is Japan’s Commitment to End Nuclear Weapons?
Yuko Yoneda | Greenpeace Japan – TRANSCEND Media Service, 7 Aug 2017

On 7 July, the United Nations adopted the “Nuclear Weapons Treaty” with an overwhelming majority. To our disappointment, however, Japan did not join the 122 countries, or two-thirds of the United Nations member countries. Japan still remains an outlier, betraying the hopes of atomic bomb survivors from Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Towards a United Nations Parliamentary Assembly
David Adams | Culture of Peace News Network – TRANSCEND Media Service, 7 Aug 2017

2 Aug 2017 – We need a profound reform of the UN so that it is managed more directly by the peoples of the world – through cities or parliaments instead of the present Member States that are inextricably linked to the culture of war. A significant first step towards such a reform would be the proposed parliamentary assembly of the UN (UNPA). There are proposals from the European Parliament, the Pan-African Parliament and an international conference of around 300 chief justices, judges, legal experts and ambassadors from nearly 60 countries predominantly from the Global South.

People were sleeping on mattresses all over the floor. Then the agent woke someone up and dragged him to the jeep. It was a 10-year-old child. “How can this be the ‘wanted terrorist’?” I asked myself.

National Illusions and Global Realities
Lawrence Wittner | PeaceVoice – TRANSCEND Media Service, 19 Jun 2017

For as long as they have existed, nations have clung to the illusion that their military strength guarantees their security. The problem with this kind of thinking is that the military power that one nation considers vital to its security fosters other nations’ sense of insecurity. In this climate of suspicion, an arms race ensues, often culminating in military conflict. Also, sometimes the very military strength that a nation intended for protection ends up emboldening it to engage in reckless, aggressive behavior, leading to war.

Or, as they say – we connect some dots that, invariably, Western mainstream media have no capacity and probably also no interest in connecting.

Radical Love
Rivera Sun | PeaceVoice – TRANSCEND Media Service, 22 May 2017

Perhaps people in the social justice movements don’t notice. The feelings of solidarity that can arise within movements can mask the ways hate for one’s opposition depletes the soul. More obvious is the effect within the opposition. Sensing hate from the movement, their hearts close off, the deficiency of love drops further, and they lash out violently, entrenching in defense of their actions.
