Leo Tolstoy (9 Sep 1828 – 20 Nov 1910)
Gary Saul Morson | Encyclopædia Britannica - TRANSCEND Media Service, 7 Sep 2020

In contrast to other psychological writers, such as Dostoyevsky, who specialized in unconscious processes, Tolstoy described conscious mental life with unparalleled mastery. Oscillating between skepticism and dogmatism, he explored the most-diverse approaches to human experience. Above all, his greatest works, ‘War and Peace’ and ‘Anna Karenina,’ endure as the summit of realist fiction.

Agenda ID2020 of the “One World Order”: The 101 to Understanding Its Implications
Peter Koenig | Global Research - TRANSCEND Media Service, 31 Aug 2020

17 Aug 2020 – Agenda ID2020 is hardly mentioned by any media, let alone the mainstream. Agenda ID2020, if carried out, is the ultimate control by a small elite – of the One World Order (OWO), also called the New World Order (NWO) – over the world population. It is a mechanism that would allow controlling every movement of each one of the 7-plus billion people of planet earth, including everyone’s health records, cash flows, bank accounts, as well as our behavior in this ultra-controlled society – which I refrain from calling civilization anymore.

In Defence of Conspiracy Theories (and Why the Term Is a Misnomer)
David Coady | The Conversation - TRANSCEND Media Service, 31 Aug 2020

Yesterday’s conspiracy theories often become today’s incontrovertible facts. In the mid-1990s, journalist Gary Webb’s claims that CIA officials conspired with drug dealers to bring cocaine into the US were dismissed as a conspiracy theory. But the claims were true. The net effect of terms such as “conspiracy theory” and “conspiracism” is to silence people who suspect conspiracies may be occurring. These terms serve to herd respectable opinion in ways that suit the interests of the powerful.

Can the U.S. Democracy Be Fixed?
Richard Falk – TRANSCEND Media Service, 31 Aug 2020

After the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, attention was redirected to the market-driven economy. With the support of both political parties, the U.S. Government focused on making the world safe for predatory capitalism, ‘the Washington consensus’ or more politely, ‘neoliberal globalization.’ This version of Marxist materialism encouraged consumerist orgies and the militarists required an enemy for continuing with wartime military budgets and restoring their self-esteem as guardians of national and global security.

Viruses Have Big Impacts on Ecology and Evolution As Well As Human Health
The Economist - TRANSCEND Media Service, 31 Aug 2020

20 Aug 2020 – In viruses the link between metabolism and genes that binds together all life to which you are related, from bacteria to blue whales, is broken. Viral genes have no cells, no bodies, no metabolism of their own. The tiny particles, “virions”, in which those genes come packaged—the dot-studded disks of coronaviruses, the sinister, sinuous windings of Ebola, the bacteriophages with their science-fiction landing-legs that prey on microbes—are entirely inanimate. An individual animal, or plant, embodies and maintains the restless metabolism that made it. A virion is just an arrangement of matter.

A truly independent press rejects the role of subordination to power and authority. It casts the orthodoxy to the winds, questions what “right-thinking people will accept without question,” tears aside the veil of tacit censorship, makes available to the general public the information and range of opinions and ideas that are a prerequisite for meaningful participation in social and political life, and beyond that, offers a platform for people to enter into debate and discussion about the issues that concern them.

The End of American History Begins in America
Hamid Dabashi | Al Jazeera - TRANSCEND Media Service, 24 Aug 2020

America’s aggressions around the globe have boomeranged into its domestic affairs. In the 1980s, Francis Fukuyama, a bureaucratic functionary, declared that “history” had ended and USA was the triumphant trophy. Had he inadvertently played a satirical spoof to the end of American history itself?

Roger D. Harris – TRANSCEND Media Service, 24 Aug 2020

18 Aug 2020 – What remains is a political theatre of two neoliberal parties vehemently contesting matters of style and colluding on matters of substance. The two major parties concur: bail out Wall Street, renew the Patriot Act, increase the military budget, modernize the nuclear arsenal, prepare for war with China, pursue regime change in Venezuela, etc.

Pivot to Peace with China. Sign!
Jan Oberg, Ph.D. | The Transnational – TRANSCEND Media Service, 24 Aug 2020

During the last few months, a systematic Sinophobic (anti-China) policy has been rolled out all over the world by the US and its obedient mainstream media. It is so uniform in content and style that it deserves to be categorized as a ‘campaign.’ It has nothing to do with critical media, questioning and diversity of perspectives. You are being taken for a ride!

Send in the Clowns for the Circus Is in Town
Edward Curtin – TRANSCEND Media Service, 24 Aug 2020

21 Aug 2020 – Trump, Biden, Pence, Harris, and their clownish sidekicks, Pompeo, Michelle Obama, et al., are performing daily. The Umbrella People run a three-ring circus, and although their clowns pop out of separate tiny cars and, acting like enemies, squirt each other with water hoses to the audience’s delight, raucous laughter, and serious attentiveness, they are all part of the same show, working for the same bosses. Sadly, many people think this circus is the real world and that the clowns are not allied pimps serving the interests of their masters, but are real enemies.

Zinn’s influence lives on in millions of people who have read his work and have been inspired by his actions. He ended his autobiography with these encouraging words: ‘We don’t have to wait for some grand utopian future. The future is an endless succession of presents, and to live now as we think humans should live, in defiance of all that is bad around us, is itself a marvelous victory.’

Disinformed to Death
Jonathan Freedland | The New York Review of Books - TRANSCEND Media Service, 24 Aug 2020

20 Aug 2020 – When a pandemic is raging, it becomes harder to deny that rigorous, truthful information is a mortal necessity. No one need explain the risks of false information when one can point to, say, the consequences of Americans’ coming to believe they can deflect the virus by injecting themselves with bleach. (The fact that that advice came from the podium of the president of the U.S. is one we shall return to.)

Alan MacLeod | FAIR Fairness & Accuracy In Reporting – TRANSCEND Media Service, 24 Aug 2020

21 Aug 2020 – Israel is bombing Palestine again, although you wouldn’t guess that from watching TV news. For the eleventh straight night, Israeli Defense Force warplanes have been bombing the densely populated Gaza Strip causing considerable damage and forcing the shutdown of the area’s only power plant. But the corporate media, focused on the coronavirus and US elections, have shown little interest in the renewed violence in the Middle East.

Arundhati Roy | The Guardian - TRANSCEND Media Service, 24 Aug 2020

At midnight on 4 August 2019, phones in Kashmir went dead and internet connections were cut. On 5 August 2019, a year ago today, 7 million people were locked into their homes under a strict military curfew. Up to 10,000 people, from young children and teenage stone pelters to former chief ministers and major pro-India politicians, were arrested and put into preventive detention, where many of them still remain. On 6 August, a bill was passed in parliament stripping the state of Jammu and Kashmir of its autonomy and special status enshrined in the Indian constitution. It was stripped of statehood, downgraded into two union territories, Ladakh, and Jammu and Kashmir. Ladakh would have no legislature and would be governed directly by New Delhi.

Nonviolence versus Capitalism
Brian Martin | War Resisters’ International – TRANSCEND Media Service, 24 Aug 2020

Nonviolent action is the most promising method for moving beyond capitalism to a more humane social and economic system. Approaches based on using state power—including state socialism and socialist electoralism—have been tried and failed. Dramatic changes are definitely needed because capitalism, despite its undoubted strengths, continues to cause enormous suffering. Nonviolent action as an approach has the capacity to transform capitalism, though there are many obstacles involved.
